Yeah I know. I can see the sale falling apart for sure. In fact I think I may have even seen it listed before some time ago. However if I lived by myself and I could lift the thing I would have had a punt on it too and driven over to Ireland.

I contacted the vendor about the projector and I am interested in it but he has 0 feedback and I have no idea if he could pack it properly for the trip. So I didn't go any further. There was also "I don't know anything about projectors" in the conversation which usually doesn't sit well with me.

I think they were in the US$170k range and a 912 was over 200k.

each replacement tube was 12k

Those are some big figures!

Yes it is a bit dubious when a seller says they don't know anything about projectors. How and why then have they come across this specialist equipment?

It's quite possible that the seller was legit, but given the insanely high tube price, and a couple of reports that they were no better than a 909 for HT use, my interest has been limited in the 812. I do know someone in the LA area that has three of them, but have not seen them in operation.

Interesting stuff. Would be nice to see some pictures inside one of these all the same.

Curt is probably right. People come across surplus equipment all the time, whether it is the original buyer or someone stumbling into stuff a friend's company is getting rid of.

The thing I find humorous is that every time one of these 12" Barcos comes up the Size Queens get all giddy with excitement. Razz Holy cow, it is 3"s bigger than a 9". Honestly, it might be interesting to look at and maybe use the electronics for backup in a regular Barco, but that is about it.

Not everyone goes for all out high res, and when it comes to lighting up a huge screen, size certainly matters. Cant argue with that no matter how hard you try.

Well I'm not really giddy with excitement as such. Just intrigued I suppose as I would be with a 9" pj having only a lowly 7" ES machine I would certainly like better. The availability of machines in the UK and the generally smaller houses mean that things don't often add up to getting what you want. If I lived by myself there'd be no question I'd go out and get the best machine I could - and also paint my living room black!

My understanding from these 12" machines coming up from time to time is that they're not nearly as sharp as the high end 9" models like the Cine 9. The 12" models are all about light output - that's the only thing they have going for them when compared to other CRT projectors. For Home Theater use, you're much better off with a good 9" unit like the Cine 9 if you're interested in CRT.

Here we go... Laughing Find the two threads from REAL owners Kal and have a read, you might be suprised... Difficult to find those two threads now but one was on AVS and another was on another forum in a foreign language about the 912.

This same opinion about them being inferior comes up every time they are mensioned, sure some of you saw one in less than optimal conditions at some show, and the 812 was apparently what all claim is the machine they saw. The 812 is an 8 series Barco and should be compared as such. A Cine 8 Onyx is not nearly as sharp as a decent 9" either.

You should know as a former Cine 8 onyx owner that the Cine 8 and 808 have no hope of doing 1920x1080p very clearly either, and that has little to do with their tubes. The 812 is essentially an 808 with 12" tubes, so expecting it will be any better at 1920x1080p than a normal 808 is asking alot, the electronics are pretty damn ordinary in an 808 if full HD is the goal. Having said that, to assume an 812 is not going to produce an image as good or better than an 808 or Cine 8 is a pretty tall order, and that is the machine it should be compared to, not the 909 or Cine 9.

The 912 is all 909 parts, so instantly you now get better electronic astig, better electronic focus, better bandwidth ( albeit it not much ) and significantly better convergence. Its full digital control against hybrid control, and that is a HUGE step up from what you get in an 8 series Barco, including the 812.

There is a Chinese member on this forum that did some Barco 808 neck board mods recently that proves without question that the tubes are not what holds the 8 series Barco back from FHD, and with the said mods done to an 812, it could easily be a whole lot more capable.

From my perspective as an arcade and retro gamer, the 812 would be nothing short of THE ULTIMATE machine for that very purpose, extreme brightness for light gun games, very long tube life, and at 15.7-24kHz it would eat it no worries.
