Hi everyone, I want to ask somebody's opinion on this issue I've been starting to have with this Onkyo receiver I bought new on Newegg.com less than a week ago! Already having video issues with it. I've read that this model had HDMI board issues and I think I got one of the bad units. It was working great up until yesterday.

I'll be watching a movie for a half hour or so and all of a sudden this green static appears all over the screen. Looks like an old cable channel that has RF interference. Very annoying. I'll change the input to another source and it goes away. But will eventually come back.

I'm really bummed out because of this because I am really happy with the sound quality and build quality. But is unusable in its current state obviously. Is this an issue I should take up with Onkyo? Maybe they would send me their current model the 838. But unfortunately it does not have Dolby Volume which is one of the main reasons I bought it. Really nice to enjoy a movie without disturbing anybody in the house with earth shattering bass (which I love, but annoying to everybody else here). I don't know how Onkyo treats its customers. Its the first time I had one of their receivers. Why can't they get these HDMI boards right? Is it just that its a new technology, or they're just half assed with testing and manufacturing?

Yep, lots of issues with Onkyos with HDMI boards. I threw out 2 last week. Send it back, and get something else.

Those Onkyos have a heat issue with the DTS chips that have a Ball Array solder connection. The boards heat up and loose solder contact.

I have repaired some Onkyos that do that. I add a heat sink to the DTS chip and main CPU chip as well.

But yours might be an actual HDMI chip problem.

Id send it back and ask for new one.

I hope newegg.com gives me a pre paid return label. I was thinking about a heatsink would be a good idea with those chips, but i'd only do that if i didn't have a warranty. It was kind of warm in here last night though... its fine now, its cooler today. So Maybe i'll try a heat-sink, it wouldn't void the warranty would it?

Get the Pioneer. The Airplay feature is great!!

You would be better off buying a used Pioneer Elite then deal with a new Onkyo. Probably not a 53 though as some of the elites were junk also. If this is an option I can give you some models to choose from.

Buying used... no warranty. Scary. I'd make sure it's at least refurbished and have a 2 year warranty. I'd even consider a power amp and processor but that is Waaaay over my budget right now. Because I get the impression that you get more quality stuff in the separates. This replaced the very simple, but reliable Denon AVR 391 I had. Just wanted something with Dolby volume and something with a more warmer/bassier sound. But, I do think this unit was overheating, as it was quite warm in here yesterday and its fine today with the cooler weather. Also placed a laptop cooler on top. If thats what it is, I'll keep it, because I'm actually very happy with the features, I don't care about Airplay. But, what are the list of models your recommend?

I do my research and shop around, I spent months before buying this one. But, sometimes I just get overwhelmed and they all seem to be about the same quality... Junk. Its disgusting.

92 or 94txh would be way better as long as it has had the freezing fix done. Or a 1522. Or most of the SC models although they changed to a plastic front on some in latter years.
