Hi guys,
What would be the best setup for the NEC XG750 using the following.
I am running the OPPO BDP103 at 1080i @60 into an Onkyo TX-NR809. output of the Onkyo is 1080i @60 into a EXT-FullHD V3 and into the projector.
I have just picked up a DVDO VP50 that I will insert between the Onyko and the EXT-FullHD V3. I will set the output to 1080i@72 or 96.
Should I set the OPPO and the Onkyo to 1080i@24?

I should of said change the OPPO and the Onkyo to 1080p@24 not 1080i.To much Friday night sherbet.

Yes I have had a few PG's in the past. Also few 12XX Sony projectors.

Thinking back about 5 or so years ago i think there is a very good chance Aussie_Al's first 9PG came from you, and was collected by a friend of mine and her old man on Al's behalf.... Came with a roll up electric screen...

I have just tried 1080i@72. I get a very dark smeared picture. 1080p works better but still has a bit of smearing.
Any ideas?

Yeah, adjust the timings. They are incorrect.
Di and Doug wouldve collected it. It was working fine last time he had it set up, its had alot more use than any others he has there.

Personally I'd prefer 1080i-96Hz, as it would show exactly twice each frame.

Possibly, im sure he will ask you if he does, he has 3 PG sets... Mine has perfect tubes and ive got a good spare set. I dont use it though.

Hi Guys,
Does anyone have some timing numbers for the VP50 1080i@72 for an XG. Had a play with some numbers that others are using with HTPC but no luck.

Why do you insist on using 1080i-72Hz? It's totally pointless, flickers much more and not giving smooth motion, while your projector should easily do (bandwidth wise) 1080i-96Hz or even 1080i-120Hz which give more statisfactory results in the above mentioned aspects! I could help you with 96Hz timings if you like.

I dont even notice flicker at 60Hz, so 72Hz should be no issue. 120Hz is just driving the projector hard for no reason.

Interesting, initially I used 720P-72Hz and was fine for me (anything in 60Hz was too flickery with viewing my conditions), later stepped for 1080i-96Hz and later when I treid to switch back to 72Hz it was too flickery! I don't think neither of these resolutions force the XG to run hard, remember the difference between XG 75 to 135 is only lies in a software limitation, So the XG75 is technically prepared for 135kHz operation, and the 1080i-120Hz needs 67kHz scanrate, 1080i-96Hz needs only 54kHz (=720P-72Hz) even my 6PG xtra was happy with the 67kHz!
Edit: The problem with 1080i-72Hz, and 1080i-120Hz is that the frames are doubbled unevenly: one frame is showed twice, the next is only showed once (or three times with 120Hz), this is almost as bad than leaving with non matching scanrate like 60Hz. With 120Hz on the other hand you get a good compromise with both 60fps and 24fps sources. With progressive scanning you can select any scanrate that is multiple of the base framerate (1,2,3..), with interlaced resolutions you'd better to select only even multipliers 2,4,6.. if you only only watch BRays the best would be IMHO the 96Hz, if you have mixed input framerates, then the 120Hz would be better. But 1080i-72Hz has no advantage at all.

96Hz is fine, but i found 120Hz to be a waste, and it seemed abit softer too.

I run the CineMAX at 1080p in both 60Hz and 72Hz, depending on what i watch. I have 817p at 72Hz set up as well but rarely use it.
I wont run the XG at 1080p because 1080i looks nicer, and i dont see the need to drive it so hard.

Quite happy to use 1080i@96. I would need to do this unlocked on the VP50. I have been playing with 72 because it was easy to select on the VP50. I was thinking I need to get 72 working before going to 96. The projector has an issue with sync. It switches off if there is no input. It also switched off at 48 last night when I tried it. It will run on 60 all day. Maybe this fault is causing the problem at 72 as well. I will have a go at 96 and see what happens.
