Ok so in order to watch the 2.35 AR 817 @ 72 hz I have to have the brightness set at 70. Then it looks the same as 1080P @ 60 hz when the brightness is set at 55. So how fast is this high brightness setting burning up my tubes ? The 72 hz setting looks amazing in brighter scenes but still doesn't look as good as 1080p 60 in darker scenes, even with the brightness set at 70. Is there any way to COPY the 1080P 60 settings to the 2.35 AR and still leave the position 2 inches above "the line" ? My wife even asks "whats wrong" when we watch 2.35 now.

Hey Jeff, there may be something setup wrong in the Lumagen... I don't really remember the menu structure of the VisionHDP line so we'd need to talk in real time over the phone while you navigate through the menus for me and tell me what's there.

The other possibility is that there is something weird with your moome board. If could be using a different black level for 1080p and 818p.

If you can, check in the Lumagen menus and make sure that all your black levels are set to "video" and not "PC." There is probably PC/Video for both input and outputs so it will be in at least two places in the menus... I think.

I chekced the lumagen and it is set to Video both in and out on mem a and mem b. I cant talk to you "live" from the basement as all I have is a cellphone and even with a booster it wont work from down there. My other option is to just watch it in 1080P 60 with it being where it is and just learn to deal with the tube burn. Right now the burn aint bad. What sucks is we are watching more and more TV because of shows like Game of thrones and I hate it just getting worse and worse.

So since 90% of what I watch is 2.35 with brightness set at 70 (for now) how long will my tubes last ? any guesses ?

Years. And there is still the wear leveling option if you can get someone over to do it for you.

I figure it will be 2 to 3 years before I can afford a decent digital so I was hoping to get some life out of them.

Wow! Are you retired, on disability, work from home? An avg. of 4-hours of viewing/day is astounding. I probably log 10 hours/week if I'm lucky.

My wife don't get home till around 3 am. I wait up for her. So I watch a lot of TV or movies late at night. Sometimes we stay up late. It adds up.

I 'only' racked up about 10 hours/week in my theater, too - give or take. But, you have a new baby. I have young kids. That really takes away from the amount of time you spend in the theater.

Plus, if somebody uses their theater for all their TV viewing, it can really rack up. I used my theater almost exclusively for movies, other than the occasional gaming session after my wife chased it in for the night, or the one episode a week of Sons of Anarchy or something. Seems like it should have only been about 6 hours/week, but it was more like 10+. Still, when we weren't in the theater, the rest of the time we were in the living room or the bedroom, often with the TV on. If you think of the theater as the primary viewing area, I can see how it can easily go north of four hours/day - especially if you're not active outdoors.

I'm not going to judge as what you (jeff) do is certainly understandable -- and any way you can make time to be with your best friend/wife is good in my book! However, 4hrs/day is a significant amount of time -- I figure if we spend (total) in the ballpark of 100hours sleeping + working/commuting + eating, that leaves about 70hours of "discretionary" awake time per week. 28 hours is about 40% of that time. Given that that is the case, your leisure and learning investment in the G90 makes a lot of sense.

I actually use my theater for TV viewing as well and still don't (and didn't prior to the baby) rack up that many hours of viewing on a weekly basis. Even the first year when I spent lengthy sessions doing set up I didn't approach Jeff's annual total. This is not to say that I don't have days where I'll rack up 4+ hours of viewing but it's simply not possible for me to avg. that given my commitments. I spend 2.5-3 hours/day commuting and spend a lot of time outdoors on the weekend so that makes a difference for sure.

I asked if Jeff works from home because I know Cliffy does and I think he's re-tubed his stack at least twice. Also, if he lets the PJ run (the way you keep the TV on) then it's easy to pass 4-hours/day for sure. However, Jeff seems quite concerned about his set up so I don't get the feeling he just runs it casually.

Besides with all that fun you are having in Utah I bet you hardly watch any TV right now. Better get the skis tuned up because winter wonderland is just around the corner Thumbs Up

I used to be very stingy about using my HT but TV is really stepping up to the plate with better graphics and better audio, some of the network shows are downright beautiful on a large screen. My wife wants to watch everything on the HT now. She has even stated that she would consider a digital upstairs on a big screen. When I explained that we really wouldn't have the same audio though she was kinda disappointed. Her opinion has changed a lot since she started watching "her shows" on the HT.

Funny how that happens isn't it? Very Happy

I got the, "It doesn't matter" speech from my G/F.
="It doens't matter if it's my 13 inch TV, my 25 inch TV your 42" TV or a projector! It's just TV!"

Shortly after I gave her a D50 and Stewart 110" screen I called her and she had her friends over watching American Idol.

"Can't talk now gotta go!"

LMASO now she loves it.
