Integra 9.9 (no load) no speakers connected at all. Running 7.1 using separate amps. Twice now at reference level ( zero ) it went into protect mode. During The amazing Spiderman twice and once during Batman begins. My other integra did this too, I don't know what could be wrong, I went through the settings and everything looks correct. Not running EQ. Any suggestions other than turn it down ? Thanks in advance.( using 5.1 set up for 7.1 if needed.)

DTR-9.9, right? Ask Mac. I think this is pretty common on the Onkyo/Integra models. Not sure why it would be doing it with no speaker loads connected. That's weird. Mac probably knows what the issue is.

Some bad amplifier designs are only stable with a load. Full voltage swing with no load will cause oscillation and either VHF or OTP protection. No help on the specific amplifier though.

My other Integra did it fully wired. All 7.1 channels driven.

I have tried changing many things, same result. This one was free. I don't think I would buy another.

I've heard of the protect mode issue on some of the Onkyos, and there's also an issue with the HDMI board that's quite prevalent. Keep in mind that other brands also have issues they're particularly well-known for.

Were I you, I'd just switch to a preamplifier. If you're using exclusively outboard amps, then you have no need for a receiver.

On that subject, I do plan to sell my DHC-9.9. It's exactly the same as your receiver, but it's a preamp. It was a flagship product, and $2000 msrp new. Street was usually around $1750. Nice, clean ones go for around $750 like new in box, give or take. I'd make you a deal on it if you wanted to upgrade. You should be able to sell the AVR for the same and basically trade even, or even make a few bucks.

Mine's been flawless since new. No shutdown issues, no DTS issues. The HDMI problems I was having narrowed down to something with my JVC projector. With my G70 and HD Fury, I never had a single issue.

Let me know if you're interested, and I'll make you a deal.

I should add… The 9.9 is probably my favorite piece of HT gear I've ever owned. It's been rock-solid and stayed really current for years. The only reason I'm considering upgrading is because I can get industry accommodation pricing on a new DHC-60.5 and because I'd like a few more HDMI inputs for testing more gear with my remote control setup. If I couldn't get industry pricing, there's still nothing else out there with bang-for-buck that's comparable to the Onkyo/Integra. Marantz is close, but still not quite. Denon has no component pieces that don't cost a fortune. Craig loved the 9.9. He said he was even thinking about going from his 80.1 back to the 9.9.

Cheers,
SC

I'm assuming the intellivolume is zero for the input in question?

I have seen many receivers go into shutdown when a level is set to close to it's limit. In your case it could possibly be the center at the -10.5
You could try changing just that setting or change them all 2 or 3 points to maintain your over all settings.
This is just a test.

Your intellivolume could be reduced a couple clicks also as a test. But be sure it is for the input in question.

Mac. Yes the intellivolume is set at zero for that input and all other inputs. I changed all the levels by 2.5 I will give that a shot and if I don't get a good result I will drop the intellivolume on the oppo input. THANKS ! Will report back tomorrow.

I watched The wolf of wall street and another movie at reference level (zero) where I usually have it at, and it didn't go into protect but there really wasn't a lot of sonic demand in either movie. I will try Spiderman or something a little more demanding tomorrow night and should know for sure then. Thanks again.
