I have my crown amp hooked up to the low end on a pair of cabinets. I have been using them to "reinforce" the subs. I really like the way it sounds, its smooth, loud and just plain works for movies. Last night the cabinets started going tick..tick... tick.. etc.. etc... I did the troubleshooting on everything and its the Crown amp for sure. Those crowns are almost bulletproof I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone before.

So it does it with no inputs connected? What happens when you turn down the volume?
A model number would help..

Well, Mac could try, but IMHO they can't be repaired. Cheaply made in China, just like most poweramps nowadays. I've popped the cover on a couple, as well as the newer Crests and QSCs, and they are as disposable as consumer electronics.

So I had the amp gone through and the NHT also. I am getting a low hum. When I plug the input into the sub out on the integra I get the ticking. When I disconnect from the integra I still get the hum. ( the crown and the NHT) no other amps hum. Any ideas ? I have replaced all cables and wires to no avail.

I double checked all the ground wires and outlets all checked good and tight.

Jeff, to "lift the ground" means to disconnect it. The easiest way is one of the $2 grey "cheater" plugs from the hardware store or 'that drawer' in the garage.

FIXED ! There is just the tiniest bit of hum when cranked up full tilt with no input, so yeah, its fixed ! Thanks !

I just want to say that the crown amp is really a lot of bang for the buck. No more than what I paid for it and it does the work of a class D amp on the cabinets. It has really surprised me. I have a friend who is a musician and he swears you can drop one out of a plane and it would still work. I almost believe him.

The "new Crown stuff" Curt? I have Crown XLS-202D's in my theater. It's made in China and a late 2000's design. However, I also have a Crown XLS-202A, ca. 2000. Made in China. 14 years ago. It's been 20 or 25 years since much electronics were manufactured here en masse, hasn't it?
I would submit that while lots of stuff is made in China, not all of it is crap, and some of it is still pretty decent. My Chinese XLS-202D's… It's good, solid construction, with real Speakons, and good quality switches and pots. Seems very well-built to me, even if it isn't up the standards of 20 years ago. I'm not a good judge of internal construction… All I'll say is obviously, it's not made in the US ala ATI, but then it wasn't $2000, either.

Oh, and I'll see Jeff's position of lots of bang for the buck and raise it. I paid $299/ea for my three XLS-202D's, and I think I got a $50 or even a $100 rebate on each. Even with the rebate, I got six channels of 300wpc (into 4-ohms) prosound amp. To go even mid-fi would have cost me soothing like $3000 for an ATI 2006, and there wasn't anything even remotely close in terms of value in any lower-end consumer "home theater" or "hifi" amplifiers, which would have been lower-powered and cost double. The only thing cheaper would be maybe some Behringers with plastic faceplates and plastic knobs. I think the value of the Crowns was outstanding.

The one used Adcom I bought some years ago, based on your recommendation I might add, had a blown output transistor. It had a big DC offset that should have killed one of my main speakers, but didn't. I realize it was an isolated incident, but it definitely left a bad taste in my mouth as far as buying 20-year old used amplifiers. That's when I started looking at pro-sound amps.
Besides, the only Adcom that would have been comparable to my Crowns would be the GFA-555 II, which really is a great amp, but would have been (and would still be) much, much more expensive to acquire three of than the brand new Crowns.

Well, good point. I know I've been in the industry too long when my clients are coming back to me, saying they need a quote for a new sound system, and my gut response is..'what do you mean, I just put that in... 17 years ago.' 
(it's happened more than once!)
While I'm more or less off the soapbox, I do still find it sad that the new electronics is lasting a fraction of the time that the 'old' stuff did. Just got another email from a customer that has a 6 year old name brand amp (I didn't install it) that has 2 out of 4 channels in protect mode. Can't fix it, I just replace it. What a waste of resources.

Yeah, we're getting old. I've started mixing up the 90's and the 2000's. sh*t. Yeah, it was almost 20 years ago that x happened, not almost 10. Dammit.

Agreed. That sucks. Six years for anything that's supposed to be commercial-grade is terrible.
