Best mod I ever did to my HT's audio.... |
Damn, what speakers do/did you own that are flat down to 10Hz? I don't even know if a pair of Dunlavy SC-VI's could do this, and those things are monsters. |
Nothing special really. I think the room is playing a factor too by the way though. It's an old pair of PSB 800's from the early 90's. They are raised off the floor by about 26-30" because I have room width issues, so my stage has the PSB subwoofer underneath the right side speaker. I built a structure around my screen that is covered with black cloth to hide the ugliness. Walls and front corners are treated.
Don't get me wrong, I was never dis-pleased with how the PSB 800 and PSB subsonic II sounded, and the addition 2 years ago of the Denon AVR-2809ci was a huge improvement to the old speakers. But I was absolutely flabbergasted by the improvement last month of disabling the subwoofer... because, you know, we all know you need a subwoofer right? I'm sure a properly sorted out LFE subwoofer will make a good improvement over the current situation (keep in mind the old sub I have was made before 5.1 was popular in the home)

Ok, I'm kinda laughing here now. Just like I've never seen a 8 or 9" CRT projector in action, I've never heard a modern day sub in action in a proper HT environment. Ignorance can be bliss my friends. But the miniDSP mic didn't lie either... and perhaps you are making assumptions about SPL? Nobody said it was loud. I just know - it sounds WAY better without the sub and the AVR reconfigured for 5.0

You can do a search for sonotube sub.
Although you could do one monster sub, I was listening to Mark Seaton and he mentioned that it is better to have multiple subs either in the corners or the middle of the walls. I don't keep up, but maybe some Parts Express Dayton sub drivers.
When I heard the DIY sonotube it was at a mini shootout. IIRC the other subs where a HSU and other $500 to $1k offerings. The DIY blew them away. I kept making fun of the store bought subs, while the DIY owner was trying to be sympathetic. As they say there is no replacement for displacement. In the case of the DIY, it was true as it was probably 5 feet tall.

Just to confirm. I was listening to another podcast with Anthony Grimani and he confirmed the multiple subs theory. You can put one in each corner or two in the middle of each wall side to side.
