Hi,
My Panasonic TH-42PZ77U (42" 1080p plasma, ~7 years old) stopped turning on this morning. Blinks 7 times. I skimmed some forums, doesn't sound like an easy fix. Bad news? Is it repairable/worth repairing?

Do you know how to solder or do you have a voltmeter, and know your way around 200+ volts?

Curt, I could enlist some help if I knew what I had to do. Did you have some specific instructions in mind/something I should be looking for?

If possible, I'd like to zero in on the source of the problem first. Otherwise, I'll turn to eBay and get SU and SC boards.

the problem is that no, there's no definitive troubleshooting method here save for some basics. There's usually some fuses on the Ysus and Zsus boards. It could also be the power supply itself, so there's going to be some financial risk involved here regardless. Most likely suspects are the Ysus or Zsus boards or the power supply.
If you don't know your way around the inside of a plasma, I'm a bit hesitant to give out troubleshooting information frankly.
you might want to price out those parts on eBay before we go any further, to see if you want to risk throwing money away.

First check the fuse on the Sustain boards. if they are blown then it is probably a faulty IPM( integrated power module ). those are a bitch to change. Just did one on a philips and now I have PS issues. so sometimes its better just to try one board at a time. but a bad Buffer board can take out a new Ysus board.
Look on you tube for how to test a buffer board for shorts, some good videos there.

Unless Mac jumps in, our resident plasma expert, I'd also suggest you check the fuses, and then start buying boards. Those prices are about 1/2 of what they were 3 years ago FYI, so for $150, worst case, give or take, you should be up and running again. Is it worth it? that's your call. I still sell the odd plasma TV that I fix up, but not for more than $150 due to the age.

Thanks. I can invest $150-200 into repairing this but anything more than (for example, here they say it's a bad plasma panel => not repairable: http://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=21700) seems like a bad idea considering how inexpensive new screens are these days.

I can't see it being a bad plasma panel. They don't fail like that, causing the whole set to shut down. Without seeing it though, I can't be 100% sure.

Disconnect SU and SD boards from the SC board. turn it on and see if you still have 7 blinks.

Yes, I am still getting 7 blinks. I then removed SC2 and SC20 connectors from the SC board and the TV powered on w/o blinking (all fans spinning). Seems like the SC board is the culprit? I wouldn't dare testing individual transistors on the board though, my soldering skills are not that great.

Yes, SC board is causing the protect. Question is, is it just the SC board or did 1 of the scan boards take it out. And if there is also a bad scan board, did the panel take it out. That's what plasmas are all about, do da, do da.

They all do, lol. The percentage of an easy repair on a plasma is very low.

Tested all FETs on the SC board, found 1 dead. Replaced it ($13 w/shipping). TV is working again.

I am pretty sure this model has a firmware update to help prevent SC board failures. You should check into that.

I've updated the firmware to the latest version that I could on their web site. It's actually the same version that I had installed on my set. There are no other firmwares to be found around and Panasonic support charges $8 over the phone even before they ask you what the problem is.
