There's an unused in-box refurb RS46 for $2K on the AVS classifieds. It's $800 more but a generation newer, but I'm sure you could negotiate a bit. Pretty sweet deal either way

So it is settled, I am building a blend underneath my couch.
Crabb,
Your idea sounds pretty interesting, but I am not sure I would want to go that route. It might look kind of cool, but you still have that massive ugly projector that would need to be boxed. I guess I know what is coming next.
Hog,
That looks nice and I might consider that one. IIRC JVC usually has b-stocks available of the current model around June or so. Do you know what the JVC street prices are? I would love to have the 4910 with 4k and DI.
Digital,
I just reread my comment about the new light source. I didn't mean it negatively. I am glad that I know that JVC is coming out with a new light source. On the other hand, ignorance is bliss. If I didn't know about it, then I probably wouldn't be anxiously awaiting its arrival.
Why do I feel like Burt Lancaster in Field of Dreams? It is funny that I do have to back up and ask myself why I got into this in the first place. Steve has said it better in other posts, but it was/is about the end result. In the 90s, I thought pjs were a pipe dream. Towards the end of the decade, digitals came out and projection started to look like a viable choice. They still had a lot of shortcomings and that is when I found the used CRT market. Somewhere in there, CRT became a hobby unto itself and the end result was only part of the equation. I guess now with digital I will get back to watching the big picture.

Well, projectors aimed backwards, bouncing off mirrors and GO!

I also found a RS46 for $1800 on eBay.
I don't know what the RS4910 is going for, I've kind of lost track of street pricing as I've stopped with my normal annual upgrade cycle until 4K becomes affordable for me. I can ask around if you'd like - although I think even B-stock 4910 will set you back by at least $3K, if not more.

I might give the AVS guy a low ball price and see if he bites. If not, then no big deal. I still have another two months to go to finish my place.
IIRC someone mentioned paying $3600 for the 4910. That is an excellent price for what you get. I would probably pull the trigger on that one except for what Digital said. With the new light source coming soon, I am really excited about the new models. If the new light source does indeed come out this year, then JVC will have made two significant changes in two years after being somewhat static for the previous couple of years.

Several companies are planning it next year. Sony and Panasonic are pushing it hard.

The RS46 for $1800 is a smokin' deal. That's $400 less than I pad for my RS45. At that price, you can turn around in a year or two and resell for not a lot less than you paid. If you bought if for $1800, and sold it for $1300 two years from now, that's $250/year to have an excellent projector while you wait for this new light source to arrive.
Spanky… What are the vitals on your room? Room size, viewing distance, desired screen size?

I agree with crabb for several reasons. After the whole RS40/50/60 bulb debacle, I'm a little gunshy about jumping on a new generation of JVCs - in this case, I'd wait a year after the new JVC light sources come out to allow any glitches to get worked through/fixed. You can hold on to it for 2 years and either get a used 1st gen LED/Laser JVC after that, or a new 2nd gen LED/Laser JVC. Either way, you'll have a great performing projector that you can use for the next 2+ years while you wait and see how this whole thing plays out. Right now there's no promise that we'll even see a new light source in the next gen of JVCs, that's just a rumor. A lot can happen between now and the end of the year.

Yeah, I will take a look at the JVC. It makes sense, which is why I won't do it. Seriously, I may just stand pat till I get all the work done. I won't really be able to watch it till almost May.
Room is 14x14 to 25 depending on if you consider the kitchen as part of the open space. I will probably be 12' back, so maybe a 200" screen. Probably closer to 90" - 100".

I'm sure there will be deals in May, too. No reason to buy anything if it's going to sit in the box for three months. Just wait until the room is mostly finished and evaluate your options then.
I don't remember how large of a viewing angle you like, but my screen is 96x54 110" diag 16:9, and my viewing distance is only about 10 feet. I'm lusting after a 9-foot wide scope screen. In your room, with a 12-foot viewing distance, I'd want a little bigger screen than even what I want. You could do a 120x50 scope screen… With the JVC lens memory, zoom in for TV and sports and have a nice bright 89x50 ~102 diag 16:9, then when you're watching movies at night, zoom out to the 130-inch diag scope screen.
Just sayin'.

Until May?! I would definitely wait. For all you know you could have a bigger place by then.

I hate you. I never really cared for scope, but now you have me thinking. I forgot about JVCs awesome zoom feature. I don't really watch a lot of movies, but this might be something worthwhile to investigate.

Wow, really? What do mostly watch, then? Just TV? Honestly, if you don't watch a lot of movies, it may not make a lot of sense. I watch almost all movies, so I'd imaging nearly 50% of my viewing is scope. If only say 20% of your viewing is movies, and only half that is scope, it doesn't really make sense to have 10% of your viewing material define your screen AR.

Totally agree - getting a scope screen when you don't watch much scope is just going to cause you to have wasted, unused screen on the left and right most of the time. I'd stick with a 16:9 screen (or whatever aspect is the one that you primarily watch).

Honestly, it is mostly TV. I find that there isn't a lot of movies that I want to watch that are coming out these days. I think there are two movies in theaters now that I might want to see. On the flip side, I love some of the better shows on TV. The Americans is probably my fave and is starting back up in a couple of weeks (unfortunately without Margo Martindale). That being said, I will probably watch more movies once I have a big screen up and running.

No sooner did I mention AVS b-stock in the other thread and look what pops up.

I am not really a Sony guy, so I am not sure how good of a deal this is. I have seen the 90 once and thought it was pretty impressive.

I have a Sony VPL-VW200 - my first Sony projector - and I have to say I was quite impressed with the image after having owned a JVC for so long (I still own my RS55). Sony uses an iris to achieve its contrast numbers because their projectors can't quite reach the native contrast of the JVCs, but their panels are driven differently and are less prone to panel induced image blur. If you're into frame interpolation - which I am absolutely not - Sony's algorithms are superior to JVC's and work quite well. Any of the projectors on that list are worth looking at.

You have a VW200 in addition to the RS55? I was strongly considering a used VW60 before I bought my RS45. The used prices on the Sonys seem to be much better than the used prices on JVCs (for buyers, not for sellers).
How'd you come to own a VW200 in addition to your JVC? Just trying it out?
