I notice forum members looking for Laser Disc from time to time. Why bother.

While I totally agree with your general sentiment, these are the reasons I can think of that somebody might be look for LD:
A) Some people mistakenly think the audio is better.
B) Nostalgia, fun, collecting.
C) It's the best (only?) way to get certain content.
The first one makes no sense, but I've seen it many times. The second and third are totally legitimate.
I saw a collection of probably 50 movies and a decent LD player a month or so ago locally for $100. I was very tempted - just for the fun of it - until I thought about how much room it would take, and how I'm trying to reduce the amount of stuff I don't use in my life, not add to it.

It's analog, was invented 20 years ahead of its time, you can fast-forward though any FBI warnings you like, it can show still pictures (tens of thousands of them, like for bonus material or similar) back in a time when no other format allowed you to do so, the discs are heavy and you don't loose them and the picture quality is awesome if the disc is mastered propperly.

Laserdisc is what started home theater and should be respected for its contribution. Having said that it looks pretty dreadful next to hd content. I still pipe my pioneer cld-99 through my lumagen hdq but i'd never use it for serious viewing. 10 yrs ago some of the best mastered LD's could give dvd a run but those days are long past.

I agree that the image leave much to desire.
But im in love with the sound of laserdisc, when played on the propper gear, and the right disc.
the way the sound is mastered, at times extreme dynamic, is amasing in my ears.
I have had experiences with soundtracks on laserdisc where i really got up thinking someone knocked the door, or other episodes that cheted me, thats level of realism i have never experienced on any other format.
I think much of it is related to the way they produced and mastered the sound tracks.
Not saying all laserdisc movies are like that, maybe 1 of 500 is simply amasing, thats in my book better than 0 of endless,
But i fully understand why most never experience this, and that most prefer sound tracks on blu ray, its just more or less the same experience every time. Never realy wow, and never totaly crap.
Overall performance dont get near the Blu Ray format, but there are still some corners of the format, that hold ground.
Thats my experience and opinion.!!

The DTS Laserdiscs are absolutely amazing sounding. I had read one time that the LD DTS stream was almost double the bitrate of a DTS stream on a DVD, but i'm not sure if that is true.

I remember that. DTS took more space that DD so the DTS folks made a DTS lite.
Does anyone here remember the Millennium DTS decoder?

That's completely true. The DTS soundtrack on LD occupied the stereo PCM tracks, so it had 1.5mbps worth bandwidth - the same as red book audio cd. Very few DVDs had 1.5mbps DTS tracks. Only a handful, actually. With less than 10mbps for video, subtitles, and multiple audio tracks, it just didn't have the bandwidth for 1.5mbps DTS. That's why whenever people bring up the superior audio on LD, I always point out that they absolutely have a point - compared to DVD. However, the discussion is completely different with Blu-ray, which is far, far superior to LD. BD is a huge leap in quality compared to LD.

Reminds me of the Lexicon LDD-1 I got with some equipment that came with the home recliners I bought on ebay. Threw away the obsolete satellite receiver, and sold the LDD-1 and the DC-1. Thought about it keeping it, but decided to sell it to buy new stuff I'd actually use.
