|
|
Hello,
Have become a crt-projector enthousiast recently, started to play around with a Sony Super bright projector VPH-1042Q (100Euro) but noticed that it has some fungus on the blue and green tube. Instead of trying to fix this, I am considering buying a Barco...now I have several options:
barco data 650: in a good shape, works, 100 Euro
barco 808-S data: powerboard is defect but lenses and tubes are perfect, should be repaired though, 200 Euro excluding a new (other) powerboard
BARCO 808-S grafics: in a good shape (10.000 hours left on tubes), works, very little wear, 350 Euro.
What would be my best route to go? Any suggestions/opinions are very appreciated!

I'd got for the BG808s
The 650 is a ES focussed none-hd machine, totally useless with current technologies.
Fixing the BD808s might be more difficult than expected, another board might only cost you 50 euro + shipping but what if that's not all?
The BG808s also has several advantages
- Scheimfplug adjustments
- 120mhz neckboards which do not streak (very important imo)
- Sony or P16 tubes (depending on the year) which are a little bit sharper

Hell yes! But beat the price down. I paid 55 euro for my BD808s with just over 10000 hours. Graphics is a bit more expensive, but not 300 euro more expensive.

A BD808s with 10 000 hours needs new tubes
You could get lucky and find a projector cheaper that's true but i consider 350 euro for a perfectly fine BG808s good value.

The 650's tubes will fit the 1042, in case you want to do that for fun. Swapping tubes is a good learning experience:)
With the BG808s, check for good light output from all tubes. The Sony tubes can lose emission after about 8000 hours. Turn the contrast to 100%, and check for video smearing. If you see a tube smear to the right (especially the blue!), then walk away from it, as it will need tubes, which are very hard to find.
I'd offer 100 Euros for the BD808s, no one is going to pay 200. I've got good power supplies in stock.

Perhaps, my main argument is that this is a situation worth haggling on the price. Used 8" are cheap, until you need new tubes that is...

Trouble is who's opinion is that? If the seller is telling you there's 10K hours left on the tubes then they better be brand new. If the tubes are new then this is the obvious choice IMO

Yes, indeed, the seller told me:
4.000 hours used and 10.000 left...
Is this realistic?
Thanks for the replies!

If true (check the chassis runtime in the menu), buy it!
Also, if the data has firmware v7.4 or later, haggle it down to 100 or 50, buy it and sell it in parts, including the firmware ROM to me

tube life all depends on how they are used. Tubes can be useless at 2000 hours, or can be in very good shape at 8000 hours. Do some reading on the main website:
http://curtpalme.com/TubeCondition.shtm
THe best way to check for the phosphor condition is to pull the lenses as shown in the above link, but if the seller doesn't let you do that, shine an LED flashlight through the lenses to check for wear.
