It's been years since I had a turn table, but recently bought a stereo preamp and thought I might want to take the plunge. Where do I look for reasonably priced TT's? What is considered "reasonable" price these days? Where do I find vinyl records these days online? I'm into R&B, Jazz, Fusion, and Gospel music; is there much available in those genres? Thanks for the help! New to the forum and a complete newbie to turntables and vinyl; this is my second post.

Unless the shipper really knows whaqt they are doing, turntables ship poorly. Do some research, CL is usually full of them, but beware of ripoff artists. as for info on how to set them up, google will be a big help.
there's a really good place that knows how to ship, they are local to me. Super nice guys, I've done a fair bit of business with them:

As for a specific turntable, I personally always stick with Technics. Well built, good quality. The audiophiles here will argue probably, but unless you want esoteric, and are willing to spend the money, Technics is just fine.

Well, it amazes me how many audiophiles "listen" with their eyes. One of the nice things about my Yamaha amp is A,B,C switching. You would be surprised what speakers sound best with their eyes closed. Really surprised.

Rudy | that's a really open ended question. What's your budget? For less than $200. your looking at a Dual 1229 and such, older Gerard, maybe a lower end Thorens.
Curt's saying technics, but that's way too broad. The higher end technics sell for a grand, and the cheap ones suck. Generally, anything that's made of almost entirely plastic, ESPECIALLY the tone-arm, should just be tossed in the trash.
For a lower end models, you will get a plastic body but you can still get a metal tonearm and the iconic Stanton headshell. Like this
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lgb/eld/4299609441.html
this nice too but needs a headshell, cartridge, and possible a belt, but made in Japan '
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/ele/4300026967.html
lower end Dual, made in Germany
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/ele/4300064941.html
as you go up in price, they get better like this Micro Seiki, sweet deal for $260.
http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/ele/4209009167.html
After that you get into the $500. + range like Rega, Linn, higher end Thorens

For vinyl, new Re-issues are pricey but AWESOME. Analogue productions, classic records, etc. Plenty of places online to buy

I have no idea where it falls in the range, or how it compares to the old Pioneers, but I bought this Harman Kardon T35C from a forum member for under $150 shipped. Pretty much like-new, and was totally clean and stock other than a Technicraft cartridge. Sounds great to me, but then I don't really have my audiophile card… I don't have a dedicated two-channel system or room, and I don't have any boutique speakers or cables anywhere in my system, either.
Cheers,
SC

SC | that's actually a very nice table. Compares to an entry level Rega which sell for around $500.
