|
|
Pretty straightforward question: How long of a run of RGBHV signal cable can be used use with the G90 before there is ANY noticeable loss in quality? I plan to use PC VGA as a source, and for cables I'll be using a Belden 1522A HD15 to 5 Female BNC Breakout Adapter from Blue Jeans Cable, as well as Belden 1694A RGBHV terminated BNC-BNC for the run. I'd like to order as long of piece as reasonably possible to make placement of the PC as flexible as possible. If it makes a difference, ind i'm guessing it does, I'll be taking advantage of most of the G90s 150KHz scan rate for high refresh rate PC gaming, as well as 1080p @72 or 96Hz for movies.
Thanks,
Matt

Why not run 5 lengths of quadshield RG6?

I'm usually down for a cheaper solution and I'm well aware of the markup on those cables, and in fact I've got a roll of "swept to 2.2 GHz" RG6 sitting in the garage right now. But considering the amount of money I've already invested in this soon-to be setup, I don't want to cut corners where it counts. Moreover, I'd really rather not mess around with tools that I don't have, trying to terminate RG6 with the BNC ends. The cables would be a 1 time purchase and done deal. So I guess my original question remains: What length should I stay under when using up 150KHz scan rate with RGBHV cables?
Thanks!
Matt

Im suggesting making your own yes, its not hard, you can probably hire the tool. Put F-Type ends on and screw BNC fittings on that. Goes from easy to extremely easy. You want female one end and male the other.
Ive run the regular multicore cable 15 meters before with no issues on a small LCD, but its a compromise.

Matt, it's pretty sure that whatever resolution you send to the G90 at 150kHz the biggest cutoff will be the projector itself in the bandwidth chain. Otherwise, buy the shortest cable you really need, because the cable has DC resistance, meaning you loose more brightness at the input with longer cables.

This is why i say use RG6, ive run that as far as 100 meters for composite video and still had a pure clean image at the other end, even when run in the same area as power cable carrying large current.

Let's say 16 feet of RG6 quad shield. Would that by any means be approaching too long?

RG6 quad shield wouldn't break a sweat at 16 feet

16' of RG6 would still be better than a 3' multicore computer monitor cable. Its got a much larger cross-sectional area of copper in there, so series resistance is very low.

Guys
You can punch up a VGA signal with a device like the Extron RGB202xi, designed to boost high frequencies and drive 50 feet or more of coax to a CRT projector. These were popular ten years ago, and left behind when HDMI took over.

More than just driving a longer cable, it's all properly terminated so you won't get the reflections you would just sticking two cables together.
Coincidentally, I just happen to have a minty 202xi just sitting around in its original box that I'd make somebody a smokin' deal on.

Isn't this the same argument as audio cables.
The output impedance of the source is low; the input impedance of whatever is being driven is high.
Resistance of the cables is not a factor
Current is almost nothing so Xl is nothing. Almost the same as arguing what effect longer probes have on readings taken by a voltmeter
So the total capacitance of the cables is about all you care about

No point being pessimistic; it probably would't work anyway.

No. But you can believe that if you like.

Pretty sure it's just an xi. I can dig it out and snap a pic or two if you want. It looks brand new, complete with box, foam, docs, etc. Probably paid a hundred bucks for it 8 or 10 years ago.
Cheers,
SC
