|
|
This was new to me over the weekend, so I'll share. I've had a few Marquee 9500s come in recently with massive discoloration of the glycol, I call it 'urine yellow'. Yuck! I bought one set last year that had bad bellows and discoloration, etc. This wasn't fungus per se, it was just a uniform yellow coloring of the glycol, and of course the color spectrum went all to hell.
I had a hunch as to why this was happening, and I confirmed it this weekend. I had drained and cleaned out the LC chamber of three tubes, and filled them with water as to not waste glycol. I sat the tubes upside down on a shelf for the last 2 months, and checked them yesterday. All three had wisps of fungus type looking crap floating in the water, and having left it alone, I'm sure it would have turned yellow.
I then drained the water out, and checked the fill holes. On all three tubes, the rubber washer under the fill hole screws had turned to mush, and the mush mixed with the water/glycol, causing the yellow tint.
Time to source out new fill screws and thin rubber washers.

Curt it would be nice if you could have fill hole screws, and the screws to put the below.
I guess there is 2 lengths of screws for the belows, one for those old models with metal ring, and another for the new with plast ring.
With the metric system here its realy hard to find any inch screws around, i guess i could measure and find some on ebay, but if you have them for a good price, you can sende with other parts when ordering stuff from you. (Hint.. Marquee housings.)

I'm on it, ditto for the housings. I need to get screws that hold the belllows in, mine are really rusty and I don't want to send them to you that way.

fill-hole is a 6-32 x 3/8" long button head socket screw. Ring-clamp are are typical 6-32 socket head cap screw but don't recall the length, I think they're also 3/8" long for the old steel retaining ring
mcmaster carr has the high grade 316 stainless 10 bucks for 100

for the fill screws part number 98164A107
cap screws 92185A147

OK, I went to Fastenal, and they supplied me with everything except the most important part.. those damn washers under the fill holes that are impregnated with rubber.
What are they called, where can I get them? Fastenal says they know exactly what they are, but can't get them from their suppliers. I need 50 of them.. STAT! Can't fill my re-bellowed/re-glycoled tubes without them.
<edit> I called Fastenal back, it's called a 'bonded sealing washer' if anyone cares. Lots of them on eBay, ordering a crapload now...
<edit again> ebay nor anyone local that I could find had anything small enough. McMaster-Carr came through!

I wanted to try a simple -007 viton o-ring directly under the button head of the screw but never got around to it

Sika-flex will do the job, or Permatex "The Right Stuff".

As in what, leakage? | yup, the ones I tried leaked but not every time. Depends on the casting. The LC housing for the marquee was crudely made. I would put the mcmaser washer with the larger rubber side down and the smaller side facing up to the screw.
a little RTV silicone is fine too

OK, thanks will do! For fun, I put some water into the contaminated housing after flushing the chamber out, and after 2 months of sitting on the shelf, I could see the water starting to discolor due to more seepage from the rubber washers into the water.
Seems like those sealing washers have a limited lifespan just like the bellows. I'll be changing those washers out with every tube that comes through here from now on.

Sooo.... any good source for the washers? Did this thread die without an answer (or did I just read badly)?
