The UPS will be a non-sinusoidal inverter, so you cant be sure that it will provide a clean enough AC supply.
115v is plenty high enough, and i still cant see that being a concern. As an electrician by trade in Australia i have a fair amount of experience with the effects of AC power supplies being delivered with a leading or lagging power factor.
Leading power factor, which occurs due to excessive capacitive loads, can cause out of control voltages.
Lagging power factor will generally result in a reduction of supplied voltage and potentially excess consumption.
Both leading and lagging can cause noise, with unusual sine wave patterns, and harmonics. Inverter type variable speed drives are sometimes quite bad for harmonics.
The only real way to correct a lagging power factor is to add a capacitor bank in parallel with the supply, best installed at the load causing the lagging power factor, but can also be installed at the point of entry to the premesis, assuming the lag is not caused within that premesis.
Any form of inductor will cause current to lag the voltage, fluro and discharge lamp ballasts, electric motors, wire-wound iron core transformers, all cause a lag to some degree, and that causes increased current draw, essentially wasted energy in the form of "reactive power". This is why the general ohm's law formula is of little use in an AC circuit, unless the load is known to be 100% resistive like a heating element.
Craig, if you have a CRO that is capable of a 120v AC input, try connecting that to a socket outlet you have there in your home, and have a look at the wave form, which should be a very nice even sine wave, with no steps or sharp peaks. If you can post a pic, it might give me something more to go on.

I had a power issue when I first bought this house I'm in. Low voltage, like 110 and there were people farther down the line that must of had really low voltages. I had the Power company come out and do a power survey. A week later they replaced the transformer. That was like 25 years ago. They came out and replaced the transformer again about a year ago.
Take a quick measurement, you should get real close to 120VAC, less then 115VAC and I would be demanding proper power. That's what they are selling you, proper power.
Another thing that has me wondering, that is, "Power Line Communication". I have one of these new smart meters and they communicate over the power line. They are piggy backing a signal on the lines that used to only carry a 60 Hz signal, which we filter out to get DC. If the power line signal is passing though without being filtered out, what effect could that have on more sensitive equipment.
I think I eliminated that cause though, at least I did my best to take it out of the equation. What I did was use a UPS (you know, battery back up when the mains are down) and hooked that up to my computer. So I was not even hooked up to the mains, well at least the computer was not hooked up to the mains. Heck, I should of had both the PJ and HTPC hooked up to the UPS, not using the mains. |
Right, have all equipment used for the video to be on the same circuit.
I had some brown out issues and some noise, like diagonal lines. I got a 5kv ISO transformer that fixed that issue.
But the problem cam back when I had Fios instaled. i have ethernet connected to my sat and BD player. If i disconnected them the issue went away. What I had to do was move the ground from the fios to my ISO ground.
Took me days to realize that.
