I forgot to mention. I have another improvement upgrade that makes a serious difference when implemented. I can't talk about it, because its a really simple upgrade, but can say it will be implemented on every board from now on, and have been done to any that have yet to be received. This is not for stock boards, so leave me alone..Very Happy

And for anyone with previous version mods (a year or two going back), I will provide a link for you to DIY. But this will happen next month.

Just messed around with calibration, and got a quite nice gamma run with the MP 03VIM

This grayscale is with 14fl on a 100" gain 1.0 screen

It will max out at 16 fl

This is a native CRT calibration.. No funny buisness.. 1080P 72 hz Need to play with focus on red and green to put them a bit closer at the low level.

A small thing i have been wondering about.

Wouldn't it be beneficial to upgrade your projector to Lug's with HFQ900 lenses? If not, why are these considerably sharper on a stock projector?

There is no benefit in sharper tubes on a low bandwidth machine other than maybe making more gap betwen scanlines.

I think the resolution needs to be the same both horisontal and vertical.

Emagine how Mikes high bandwidth will make a set of LUG tubes look like..

If the tubes survives the trip, ill at some time put new LUG on green and red in my Mp moddet Marquee 9553 with HD10E lenses ( HFQ900)

Maybe ill just get to visible scanlines, and need to defocus them.

I prefer to not use LUG's because of their smaller dot size, that would make for a really sharper image, but at the same time the tubes wear faster.

The HFQ's I'll being going for, and will have them before i finish the theater.

The reason they are sharp on a stock Marquee, are from several things. Starting with being able to 100% resolve full 1080P, a very clean video chain, an improved and more accurate DC restoration circuit for the HDTV standard, and to recently producing a more linear image and better black reference.

I didn't know HD10E's where HFQ900's in disguise.

Mike, swapping lug's in your machine would it be benifical? (not considering costs etc) or will there be very little difference?

(also, LUG's have a lower lightoutput if i'm correct?)

I'm not sure how LUG's would play out on this version. That's why I'm waiting on stridsvognen to do the testing for me.

No LUG's would have a higher output, but because of the smaller spot size, they may not last as long as the LCP's

I can tell you this, that mini board makes the image look so much sharper you'd think you were looking at a digital. Not sure if I'd want to lower the light output by using LUGS but I'm sure Kurt will let us know Thumbs Up

I removed my moddet neckboards yesterday, and put in some standard neckboards, going with my MP 03VIM.

Now it can be dificoult to see improvements when slowly geting them, but this step back just display what i got used to.

Its nothing like playing with the VIM.. there you see the bandwidth role off making the lines much darker, compared to the perfect 03VIM.

Here they are still bright, but they do change colors.

2nd i noticed that the ability to hold focus went down the drain..

And the ansi contrast.. damit.. this looks compleetly washed out.. I guess its noise in the image, and i did calibrate it to the same spec as the moddet neckboards.

Im loosing lots and lots of details.. colors are muted flat, no dynamic range left.

I am running 188Mhz, so im sure ill be able to get some of the lost stuff back lowerint hte framerate from 72 to 60.

So i think i can say its quite meaningless to test the MP VIM without the MP neckboards,

Not that the vim alone dont change anything, it will show very clear on a test pattern, but still be far from complete.

With the mods instaled, there is something we need to adapt to, and thats the changed response to Contrast and brightness.

I did measure 16fl on a 100" no gain screen with full contrast. And not much blooming. MP 03 VIM and neckboards.

I normaly run a contrast around 80-82, that gives me 10fl.

Putting back the standard neckboards puts contrast down to 60 to get 10 fl.

But already at 12fl you get heavy blooming.

I dident measure full contrast with standard neckboards, but it is my impression that they will measure almost the same max output, just with heavy blooming and that the light output roles off when the blooming sets in.

So my conclution is that the moddet boards holds a much more linear output from 0-100, but we just have to adapt to the higher contrast nr on the screen screaming danger danger when we are used to standard boards.

Before I visited Mike's he asked me to talk with Curt about his experience (since Curt had just been there) and Curt told me that 100 contrast on Mike's boards is like 70 on stock. This goes back to what I said in one of my original posts; you likely need the whole package to really see the difference. Mike has altered the video chain (offset) quite drastically and while you can mix and match, to really get the full benefit takes the full set and the mini board. Just wait until you see what it looks like with the mini board Mr. Green

The sharpness is unlike anything I have seen on a CRT set up. Have to wonder what that would look like mated with LUGS...

The lug ting ill try, just one problem.. I dont have a blue lug tube, if im lucky then it just fit so blue dont need to be defocused.

The contrast thing is not important, like 100 is not possible to use on a standard machine, it will look like crap.. So i just look at the light ooutput.

Im realy exited to see how the mini board behaves on both the 02 and the 03 VIM.

Attached is my commercial version of my 02 VIM mod. It has two (2) mini boards, the red one is a power supply for the +/- 14 volt rail into the sample and Hold circuits (both int/ext). It corrects on that VERY noisy 14 supply rail, and provides a VERY clean +/- 12 volt supply for those circuits. This commercial version makes for an almost noiseless VIM. And that lends to a super black level performing VIM.
