I just got back from one of my clients in Texas. He finished building a new house and has now torn into the theater. The theater is a work in progress as you can tell from the photos below, but it is coming along nicely. This theater is one of the nicest home rooms I have been in so I asked if I could take a few photos to share with the forum. Sorry about the lousy picture quality. All I had was my iPhone and not much time left at the end. I'll be back there in the Spring next year to touch up the projector once his new tubes break in.

He's not a huge Harry Potter fan, but he really likes the dining hall from the Harry Potter movies. He used that dining hall as the inspiration for his build. The chandlers and sparkling ceiling represent the floating candles from the movie, and the whole room has the right feel. He also wanted the room to look like it had been built hundreds of years ago and was now being re-purposed as a theater room. Actually, he doesn't consider the room a "theater" room per-say, it's a multi-purpose room for listening to stereo, theater, reading, or whatever.

All the equipment in the theater is super high end including the separate MBL speakers for stereo listening and then the video MBL speakers.

Here are some photos.

The first four photos are of the room from different angles. The center and rear center MBL were not yet unpacked, but you can see the two large MBL's for stereo along with the four smaller MBL's for the video tracks.

Few more angles including the G90 with fresh tubes.

Hand made custom chandeliers. These are really beautiful in person.

Several shots of the stereo dedicated MBL speakers and their subs. These speakers are works of art in themselves.

Gargoyles atop columns on sides of screen and behind seating area.

All the woodwork is very fine and custom hand carved. I especially liked the lions.

Painted mural on left side of theater to look like a window overlooking a dark evening lake.

The back corner of the room opens up into the media and memorabilia vault.

Here is something really sweet... a photo of the original five Beetles while in Germany with a pay receipt signed by all five members. One of the only known pieces of paper containing all five original members signatures!

I'll get you guys better photos when the room is finished and I am back down to touch up the new tubes in the G90. I'll bring a better camera, because what I have shown really doesn't do the room justice. It is truly stunning and easily one of the top five rooms I have ever been in.

Well Curt, as you and some others know my ears have been damaged by my auto immune disease and I no longer have the golden ear that I used to. That being said, I would have loved to have heard them, but they weren't hooked up yet Sad

He does have a second stereo set in his living room and another smaller set in his bedroom, but I was too darn busy to listen to any of them. He had a pair of the big ones last time I was down in Texas too, but I was too busy that time when I was there to listen then as well. Actually, I did have some spare time at the end of my last trip, but the choice was that I could listen to the MBL's or take his Lamborghinis out for a test drive... I drove around the Lamborghinis Mr. Green

I promise, when I am there in March I will spend a long time listening to the MBLS and get back to you on that one Wink

PS Curt, as you may have guessed this was the guy whose DF board was throwing codes five minutes after we put the G90 on the ceiling. That killed a lot of my free time along with about 1000 other things that went wrong and that I had to overcome during this job.

I also had to squeeze two other clients in during my five days in Texas too.

I will ask him to make me a list Tom. Honestly the guy is a audiophile, videophone, and collector of AV equipment. There was so much AV gear all over the place that I couldn't remember what was going with what.

He's huge into Vnyle and for a CD player I know one of the choices will be an Oppo BDP-105 because two were delivered while I was there. I have already forgotten everything else.

The G90 came out great, but everything possible seemed to go wrong and by the time I was finished I felt like I got hit by a train. I have been sleeping all day today and it seems my numb mind has been wiped clean...

They're really strikingly beautiful. He has two pair of the 101 X-tream's. A version 2 in the living room and the ones in the theater are version 3.

I believe the video speakers are the MBL 111 F Hybrid for the left and right fronts and surrounds. I have forgotten which model he told me was for the front center and rear center (he's doing 6.1) for video. I do know it is a shorter model that typically goes on a stand, but he plans to place the front on the floor between the two cabinets in front of the screen.

For those who are curious...

awesome room

i agree with spanky the sony needs to blend in with the rooms decor

i love the speakers being a audiophile myself i appreciate the art of audio

heck i would love to have a room like that(pondering of adding a room for the home theater even though i have one already Smile)

the speakers i like are the vintage like the older infinity speakers(e.g. infinity's irs beta)

ps spanky email me those pics of the g70 so i can decide

mbl 101 X-treme Speaker System

Two towers - one with two separate drive arrays (left) and the other with six 12" subs, crossover, and amp (right). 3600 lbs, or just 400 lbs shy of 2 tons. In most houses you'd have to pay special attention to where these go or have the floor reinforced.

Price? $263K per pair. Wow!

Hey, remember that this is a work in progress. I'm trying to get him to build a hush box for the G90, but right now he's so overwhelmed with all the other considerations that he just can't handle one more thing. He was going to have me remove all the G90 trim and take it to the auto body shop for a chocolate brown paint job, but I am pushing for the hush box. So for now he's undecided.

His G90 does have my fan and cooling mods so it is already much quieter than a stock G90 and he thinks it is quiet enough. He'd rather just paint the chassis and be done, but ever since I put the hush box on top of my fan mods in my own theater and I can hardly hear the G90 I've gotten spoiled by the near silence.

If he hasn't done anything by the time I come back out in March I will suggest to him that he have the chassis painted before I come back so that I can do the touch up with the full chassis installed.

One way or another, the G90 will not be the ugly center piece for long Wink

You're probably right, I'll ask because those may or may not be for that room or for the theater / stereo system. Some of those amps were really heavy for their size; 85+ lbs each (almost 40 kg).

Yup, that's them. There are two tower subs like that, one for each drive array.

The living room has the older version 2 of the 101 X-treme speakers also with a pair of the tower subs.

So get the speakers up stairs into the theater room sounded really tricky Wink. These are on the second floor of the house, but I am sure that he paid special attention to the floor when the house was built so that it can properly support the speakers.

Both the drive arrays and the subs stand several inches taller than I am.

He said he got the set in the theater at a "price he could not refuse..." but I didn't ask what that meant.

Depends how you look at it. The room its self is done in very dark colors and I didn't see any problems with room reflections. The wood trimming around the screen however was clearly visible from reflected light surrounding the screen. I suggested that he paint it flat black or velvet the trim, but he says he likes the reflection to remind him that he is in a hundreds of years old re-purposed room. He doesn't want to alter the feel of the room in any way to detract from the concept.

They crystals and other reflective things in the room really didn't have any noticeable impact on the picture to me.

Oh yeah, and the library is just awesome. In his last house one of the bedrooms was used for the media library, but now he has a cool spot for all the media. Most of what you see there is vinyl, than there are about 300 laser discs, and lots of DVD's and BDs.

The theater is actually sitting over the second garage that houses two Lamborghinis... He is a smart guy and very mechanically inclined. I am sure he took proper considerations when the room was finished to make sure that the room did not wind up falling into the garage and destroying the cars and theater in the process Wink
