This was a somewhat blind buy; I was able to get it plugged in and the lights came on/fans wirreled up, but with no remote (wired or IR) nor inputs I wasn't able to check the picture at all. I only paid 325 for it, so figure if it's a dud the very nice looking tubes, housing, lenses, and boards should make the money back.
Anyway, my understanding is that this is a rebadged 9500LC and my conjecture is that it'd be able to pair with an 9500LC IR remote? I want to order one so I can start messing with this monstrosity (Or if there are any kind folks in the Porland, OR area who'd be willing to part with one?)! I imagine that the serial port on the back can't be used to control it via a PC without some custom software?
My CRT experience is mostly adjusting the focusing pots and timings of my FW900 (which seems to be giving up the ghost due to a cathode heater short I think), so while I may be somewhat nerdy about these things for a girl, I'm wondering if I've just bought in to a money pit; should I just sell this thing over and escape while I still can? I kid I kid. That being said, any advise for a first timer would be appreciated though!

Hi and welcome.
I have a 9500LC myself.
About controlling it it's possible with the RS232 software and you can download it from here:

I guess you would need the control software.
After it fires up you should first check the p14 heater voltage if it's 6.35V because if that is too high you could have clean looking tubes but the light output will be low and you cannot use the projector. All this you can find on curts site.

Welcome, and good score!
If you're lucky, that's actually an Ultra. The way to tell is to take a look at the focus board. If it has about 1/3 of the board not having parts on it, it's a 9500. If the whole board has parts on it, it's an Ultra.
I have lots of the remotes, but I am out of town until the end of the month. I also have new in the box tubes at a fraction of new pricing if yours show wear, but try the set first before you spend a lot of money on it. I'm sure it works fine.
Controlling the set via the 9 pin port can be done, but using the remote is far easier.
Check under the cover of the unit, a wired remote may be there as well.

Welcome synnove, and good score on the PJ. Was that the red cased one that was on craigslist from the shop on Division street?
If my Runco980 wasn't working so stellar I would have checked that one out too. Enjoy.

Thank You! I'll check the boards when I get it home, and probably post a host of pictures as well of the insides and raster faces. To check the P14 I'll need to procure a volt meter, though based on what I read, this is a defect in units made between 96 and 98, yes?
I found a IR remote for the 9500 series on the 'Bay for around 20, think I'll pull the trigger on that tomorrow. I took all of the panels off when I was investigating with nigh a sign of the wired remote, save for the cord.
This wasn't on ebay, rather this was in a pawn shop in the Portland, OR area; they were asking 399 for it (was on craigslist for about 8 months prior) and had no idea how it worked or really what it was (they even lost the remote for christ's sake). Their story was that they had a connection to Hollywood video who supplied them with lots of electronics, one of which being this. The former HWV corporate headquarters is about 20 minutes away, so I reason it might have come from there. It also came with an older video processor which I'd guess is mostly worthless now.
*Yes loud mouse, this is the red one from Division. The place reeked of absolute dreck, so I'm glad to give this fine piece of outdated awesomeness a home (for now). I still need to pick it up from there actually as I wasn't able to fit the damn thing in my car yesterday. Say, I don't suppose you'd have a RBGHV to HD15/VGA adapter laying around anywhere?

I saw that one on craigslist for months and several times thought about going to get it as an upgrade or spare. But I had no desire to swap out the Runco or hoist another PJ up to the 9'+ ceiling in my garage theater. Since we moved in to the new house I really had to get rid of all the surplus electronic stuff and have no room for spare anything. No extra cables either, otherwise I'd be happy to donate one to the cause.
I hope you'll have some fun with that one.

Hay to the op if you decide to remove the vision 1 case let me know as I am wanting for my vision 3 as I just changed it to a vision 1 and love the pic from it just want the fiberglass case

I checked this projector out myself a couple weeks ago. I crossed all numbers and it was clearly a Vision 2. They also said on the price tag that it was an 8500. Had it been a 9500 I would have taken it. The upside was that it had no visible burn but even so it wasn't about to replace my g70. I'm glad someone found it.

If it is a vision 2 never mind mine is a vision 3(but I don't have the pinaferia case)I recently upgraded it to be a vision 1(marquee 9500LC)with mint tubes

The vison sets used different cases for each model and the one in the pic is a vision 1 for sure

Here are a couple pictures of the actual unit. The picture that was posted was the picture that the pawn shop posted on craigslist. The projector doesn't have tinted C elements and is not LC.
Right now there is a Sony 1292 in Eugene with remote, hushbox and screen for $500 which seems like a better deal.

FYI the cases are swappable so if you want a black case let me know and we can trade as I have a set of 8inch tubes in good shape (green 8 red and blue 9) that I want out of my way or I can swap cases
Believe me you will enjoy that set

Sweet, a red case! Never seen one in real life before.
A $40K projector (originally) in a pawn shop! I wonder how much cash he got for it? 
I've got 150 sets at home. Maybe I'll load up a 5 ton and take them to Pawn Stars?

I had a look at the tube faces and they looked brand new, as I couldn't detect any wear with a flash light on em. I'll pick up a rs232 tomorrow and take a shot getting this thing on.
I imagine trying to sell it for 325 would be asking to much? I really wanted to get a nine inch set, have little use for an 8 (though it's very aesthetically pleasing).

If the tubes look good, you will be able to make a nice picture with a well tweaked 8500AC. You should keep it till you find a 9500LC.
And then its still nice to have spare boards and PS.
I doubt it will sell for much more than 100$, unless someone wants the Vidikron case realy bad..

Don't sell an 8 inch EM focusing set short. if the tubes are mint, and you add a Moome HDMI card, feed it 720P from a blue ray player, you'll be surprised at what a fantastic pic it will throw onto the correct screen material.

The 8500 will actualy look better with 1080P in my opinion.. .. so no scaling needet...

some people prefer 1080P, the 8500 will certainly do it. I know Craig Rounds recomends 1080P to his Marquee 8500 customers. To my eyes though the ANSI contrast seems to suffer with so much scan-line overlap. In other words the dark parts of the screen in mixed light/dark scenes start to go Gray(er). Have you noticed this?
At any rate with a BD player, you can set up 2 channels on the Marquee and toggle back and forth between either of those (or even 1080i of the flicker doesn't bother you.)
