But that's generally not even possible.
Other than an HTPC (and a video processor - which isn't really a source), you can't adjust output levels. At least I've never seen it. You can't do it on the PS3, satellite boxes, cable boxes, or any Blu-ray or DVD player I've ever seen.
What sources are you using that allow you to adjust the output level?

I guess a well set-up CRT with decent tubes shoud end up after calibration with brightness values somewere between 40-55 and contrast 60-75.
When not the case, the PJ may not be in good shape, the tubes are worn, raster size is not ok or simply your screen is to big.
I also belive that for a punchy 3D-like image, a screen width should never exceed 90 inch (230 cm) even for a 9 inch machine.
Again, that's just my opinion, i'm not a calibrator. People with more experience could have another meaning.

I hate to be a bubble buster but why is most 9inch machines able to work great with a 100+ inch screen?
I know as my nec 10pg is like that

E, he said 90" wide. My screen is less than that, yet its 125" diagonal.

My settings with brand new P19Lugs in my Cine9 after color calibration.
Brightness: 37
Contrast: 65
