I would have agreed with what SC wrote until this Arizona song and dance started, then it started to sound like a Gary Murrell story.

+1. I'm surprised that's not standing out as a glaring red flag to some here.

Boy and I thought I was always good at flogging a dead horse.
The customer has seen this thread, and we've exchanged a few more emails without the heat of our bruised male egos.
He did actually give me the name of the A/V company and contact name of the person that had the system board in stock. Runco had apparently given that company as a referral. On the one hand, I've had dozens of people call me that have Runco projectors, because Runco hasn't supported CRT since Sam sold the company 5 years ago. OTOH, maybe Runco/Planar realized they were abandoning old Runco customers, and are now making a token effort to still appease their CRT customers. Who knows.
The USPS postmaster amazingly did call me this morning regarding this issue, and also about the other three missing packages.. that were delivered this morning. Apparently the delivery date is 'approximate' on their tracking website, and can take up to 5 business days longer than estimated to arrive. So those other 3 packages, while late, were 'technically' delivered on time.
The postmaster was so intrigued by this story, that he insisted I email a special investigation division of USPS to check out this NC to Arizona package. they want to make sure that someone isn't scamming USPS, but they also want to make sure there's no monkey business going on within USPS. Apparently USPS has additional ways to track the package within their system that doesn't show up on their USPS website.
So, whatever. This is now resolved as far as I'm concerned. I believe the customer also considers this to be over.
Again, thanks for the input, that's why I post stuff like this here. It keeps my own ego in check and hopefully lets me improve my own customer service.

Glad you're getting it squared away, Curt. Kudos to you and the customer for working through it.

I think it's particularly notable, and I said so in my post. OTOH, I'm not sure what you can do about it. There is certainly a red flag, but no proof of wrongdoing. So, given that it could be a scam or not, do you err on the side of wrongfully screwing a customer, or on the side of potentially screwing myself? I think that's why people are glossing over it a bit... It's sort of a separate issue.
Personally, unless I was pretty damn certain of some wrongdoing, I'd err to the customer's favor and try to make it right, even if it cost me some money.
If the dollar amount went up significantly, it would be a more difficult decision and discussion.

Sure, if you're going to approach it from a customer support/service standpoint, I don't blame Curt for giving the refund - I said as much several posts ago. I was simply agreeing with jask that your "contract" reasoning only held up as long as everyone was actually telling the truth. At this point, no one here really knows what actually happened to the package, or how valid this AZ story is. I'll certainly be interested to see the results of the USPS investigation if Curt chooses to share that with us.

I hope I'm wrong, there actually is an AZ connection, and my faith in human nature is restored. If the skeptics are right, then this guy is facing mail fraud charges. Wouldn't it suck to commit a Federal felony over $250. ?
