Not all the newer sets but the older ones were more like a regular projector inside a box then the newer ones(I have had both)the newer ones also have digital geometry controls(though not same as a projector)
But the digital rear pro tvs are a completely different animal to the crt ones(also have a dlp rear pro)

I thought you ment crt rear pro tvs(next time make it clear which type of tv style your talking about)
There is different types of rear pro tvs
Crt(the best and the kind I mostly worked on and liked)
Lcos
Dlp(have one which isn't bad but motion blur is noticible)
LCD
How amd I supposed to know which type your talking about I ain't a mind reader
The dlp tv I have I got cheap(12 dollers us) and got fixed for free under the extended warrenty from samsung(that was a plesent suprise as the part was 300 dollers not including labor)
Both my rear pro tvs are samsung

I mean ALL TYPES. They ALL have a video projector of sorts inside them.
Why youre trying to complicate it with what type the projector is im f***ed if I know, cause they all work the same way!!

It allows zero keystoning which makes things easier on the electronics...it allows you to watch the projector with some lights on in the room...to me, I am just baffled why it's not more popular. |
I can think of many reasons:
(a) requires more space that ends up being dedicated to having rear projection. No other use.
(b) requires more equipment, different screen, is more work to set up. Therefore more expensive.
(c) Having any lights on hurts the contrast ratio. If you're into the best picture possible for HT, you have to have all ights off and avoid any light bouncing back onto the screen.
Usually people that may want to watching a projector with some lights on don't care about image quality too much so a simple digital that is very quiet and also very bright works well for them. Why go for all the work of rear PJ?

I ain't complicating nothing crt projection tvs can be modded to be used a front projection type where digital sets can't (hence why they have the same picture geometry controls as a projector)that's why they are just a projector in a box(digital sets are fixed to that screen size)

I am what some call a uncertified expert
I helped the samsung "expert" who replaced the dlp chip in my digital samsung rptv(also took the time to clean the fans in the set)I have a pic of the dlp chip on my computer
Plus the crt HD projection tv I have almost got back to working where a another "expert" claimed it uneconomical to repair(even cleaned the screen and lens from the nicotine from where my neighbor had smoked during the 10 years he had the set(its a samsung also and uses panasonic p16 8inch tubes) still have the broken tube that got damaged from the convergence amp board failing in the set(still have to replace the board)
I have been asked to look at a flat panel to see what's wrong with it(everything works but no picture from what I have been told)

If I had an extra room to put the projectors I would do a blend in rear projection as that looks great

for crt there is simply one major and huge plus...
no huge, loud behemoth on your ceiling. Even if you can make it quiet, it's still obtrusive and annoying. It would be far better if it were not in the room at all.
and since after that, you could very likely achieve equal pic quality...it's totally worth it.
this, of course is my opinion.

I agree there while my marquee is quieter then my other sets its not noiseless(hopefully I can get the fan mod done soon) as far as it taking up space I don't mind as I am used to my displays taking space (I have two projection tvs in my viewing room right now one is behind my floating screen and can't be seen the other I plan on swapping out my plasma with(immune to burn in because of dlp)in my bedroom(if I could set up another projector it would be great)

You wont achieve equal picture quality without spending an incredible amount. Youre talking diffused Vs direct view.

You repeat the same things over and over in almost every thread, so I know all that stuff you just re-wrote about your TV. Its one thing to bumble your way through a job, but you claim you cant even replace capacitors, which is the most basic of technical tasks.
The part where you and I differ here is I have a few pieces of paper as well as a license, so the Australian Government obviously believes I knew what I was doing when they tested me, even if you dont

and Kal, ambient lighting is where rear pro would be vastly superior to front projection. This is not up for debate...it is fact.
to me, getting the projector out of the room is huge....your kids could walk in front of the screen with no danger of being blinded...and not shadowing the screen...you COULD (not that it's ideal) watch movies with some lights on...I don't see why this is bad, I have done it 100's of times on my direct view crt. SPorts on a huge screen with lights on would be really cool.
The room could easily do double duty as a storage room...or many other things. By no means would have to be only for a projector.
I don't really see why installation would be so much more difficult. You could just put the projector on a table so that the lenses were level with the center of the screen...likely a hell of a lot easier than lugging a crt to the ceiling.
But yes, likely more expensive...I'll give you that.
I think a massive blend would just be unreal...with no projectors in sight, it would be special. Very special.
