I just received my Crystalio 2 today, exited like a child on xmas evening.

It was a unit with defect audio out, not sure how, it do HDMI audio in. Coax out, not yet tested analog out, but for sure no HDMI audio out.. Not sure these machines ever supported HDMI audio out.

The HDD is missing, not that its important.

My main reason to want one of these is to try the Comb filter for Laserdisc.

Right now its conected to my MSB LS2 Gold Player, and i have to say this VP is to analog inputs what a Radiance is for Digital.

There is a stack of options for adjusting the comb filter, different deinterlacers, i think ill need a few days to know this one.

I think Laserdisc looks better already.. Thumbs Up

I did a lot of testing and adjusting last night, and im verry happy with the result, LD Picture is better than i ever seen.

The noise reduction and different comb filter adjustments Works better than on anything i ever tested.

Normaly i run all sources true my Radiance, but for laserdisc, Crystalio just looks amasing when sende RGBHV direct to the Marquee.

I need to do a gray scale calibration with the crystalio 20 point corection, and will try to calibrate the colors to REC 601.

Ill see if i can make some good screen shots from LD.

Ohh and got sound out of the HDMI last night,, not sure why or how, but its working now. Thumbs Up

Was cleaning the boards in my Cryatalio today, and replacing a few caps in the PS, and found a dead cap on the main board.

That burnt Tant might be why the Audio was not working all the time. Nice VP there Kurt.

Yeah, maybe, i removed it and put a electrolyt in there.. Dont have any tant.
Just before i opened it i was playing with audio via HDMI, and it acted weird, it sounded like the center track was missing, and im with a stereo setup, downmix all surround tracks to 2.0, turned the C2 off and on Again and it was fine.

Im not planing on running HDMI true the C2, i tested DVD 576i component, and 576P HDMI into it today, and its douing fine, but the Denon DVD A1XVA 576P HDMI out into the Radiance is still the best deinterlacing / scaling i seen.

Its a damn nice VP, it takes laserdisc image to the next level with its TVP 5160 3D comb filter, and Faroudja deinterlacing.

I think the scaling looks a bit like DVDO VP50, quite some ringing, but can be removed when playing with the noise reduction and smooth scaling adjustments, and look quite close to the Radiance, just a bit softer.

I think it will complete my VP needs put together with the Radiance, then ill be able to get the best of both Analog and digital sources.

Om quite sure that it will compete with the Moome Card as a DA converter if 1080P 60hz will do, for blu ray.

But im addicted to 72hz with 24hz sources, and only use 60hz for laserdisc, and NTSC DVD.

I
can only recommend this unit for Analog lovers, and use Radiance to handle all digital sources.

I have been using the Crystalio more than 14 days, and i think i know my way around it.

There is som nice features like gamma corection for both input and output, i like that i can calibrate the crystalio to the display, and after corect each input in the input gamma adjust.

The latest firmware is still full of bugs, but it seems possible to work around them so far.

1 very anoying bug is that it dont do the colort space output right, if i put 4:2:2 it might outpur RGB, and i have to go flip the colorspace before its right. Its a startup isue.

Another thing is the standard timings will not work in a normal 1080P TV. so i need to make a profile with the right timing for each output format.

Like a 480P will output the wrong framerste.. 37 or something like that, douing a profile manual setting 59.96hz it works.

1080P 60 hz have a wrong front porch, and 1080P 24hz have a wrong H total and front porch.

Im still amasing to see how laserdisc looks with this VP, it will improve on LD image from any player, but the normal Pioneer players still look like crap, Its only when i use my MSB laserdisc player it starts to shine.

I had a friend here the other day, he was about 1,5 m from my 2m wide screen, looking The Fifth Element on LD. Now he wants a Crystalio.

Anyone wanting to see it in action is welcome to drop in.. Wink

Glad you set me off in the right direction with VPs.. may ditch the PC after all. If Crystalio 3300 had the ability to run 816p72 Hz I would buy it.. sadly it doesn't. Otherwise it's within my price range off things. There's one out there for sale on AVSF..

Fun you should mention that now.

Im messing with 820P 72hz right now. And i think i just found out how to set it up.

Just need to check if i do 1:1 pixel mapping right.

It looks like its very simple to do a 817P 72hz setup, its just to set the timings right, and activate the 1:1 pixel mapping in the image menu.

And then there is no more to it.

So it for sure have the ability to run 817P 72/ 75hz

the limit is the 165Mhz pixel clock, and the clock is calculated every time you change a timing value, so you know what headroom you have, much more simple to setup than the Radiance.

I just love the info display... Its posible to see all the settings via the display, so no problem when set a non valid timing on a TV , no OSD needet to get a pic back on.

It means no scaling of any kind, so what you get in is what you put out, and setting the output 820P and select 1:1 pixel mapping it just crop the input to match the output

Just did a grayscale calibration on my laserdisc setup... Damn it looks good.. Thumbs Up

If it keeps getting better like it have untill now, soon it will pass Blu Ray quality.. Wink

Im using my MSB laserdisc player, feeding composite to my Crystalio, and then 480P to my Radiance.

I did the gamma/ grayscale calibration in the Radiance, The Crystalio missed range, and addet lots of color banding.

It looks amasing with no noise reduction of any kind, just tweaking the comb filter adjustments in the Crystalio, and using the DCDI deinterlacing.

Watched the Criterion Pulp Fiction on LD last night.. Laughing

Hey I have that LD. Good picture. Too bad all my LD players have died. I wanted to try an experiment. Run the LD into a stand alone RGB decoder then scale that. Sort of like what you did.

I think much of the quality is the player.. The MSB is based on a Panasonic player, and the player i have seen they do perform better, and much more quiet and stable. I have a lot of Pioneer based playere, they look like crap next to this MSB.

But i prefer the sound of the Pioneer players.

I think the best single VP solution must be the Lumagen HDQ, same comb filter as the Crystalio, and no ring scaling, just look like the deinterlacing is a bit behind.

The no ring scaling is very important with this low resolution material.

You should see a Pioneer HLD-X0 with a CII !!! picture is orgasmic!

Crystalio 2 still beats the Radiance when it comes to deinterlacing SD

and the Comb filter can't be beat!
