Common misconception of newbies with any projector the room has to have full light control
Plus when a crt projector shows black there is no light emitted from the set period(every crt projector is the same way)
FYI having the lights on while using it is bad for image quality(I rarely do that myself)
Also the only time a crt(either direct view or projection) displays a light gray image something ISN'T right(either g2 or brightness is too high) I made that mistake myself before on a projection tv I had
Now calibrate that beast and enjoy it sheesh if you give up now what's the point of getting it in the first place belive me it will cream the digital projector you are used to once set up properly
If you don't believe me I can post some screen shots of my marquee after I got it calibrated and let you see how a crt can do

Well, I got it for free. I rescued it from recycling, as it was supposed to work and I really thought it wasn't this big and heavy. I couldn't manage it on my own and needed my neighbor to help me carry it from my car to my appartment, and even with help we were both finished afterwards. It's a big heavy machine, too big. I cannot find any excuse to keep it as the equilibrium of "use to me" versus "space taken" is totally on the "space taken" side. I couldn't walk upright under it, I wouldn't dare to install it in my ceiling anyway as it is only 14 cm concrete panels and the thing is simply too heavy to hang. I don't even have any proper ceiling holder for it. And nobody wants to buy it from me. I tried to give it away, just like the dude that I got it from. Now I'm *it*.
About CRT and grey phosphor surface: Have a look closer, the CRT surface is grey, or greenish (unless you have some smoke-glass or filter infront). In a dark room you don't see it, but in daylight you will. It goes for any CRT.

What is your measurement? How may metres x metres? My room is 3.6 x 5.5 I have a 1252 on a hand cart with my spare electronics stacked on top of it.
I have my Ampro 4000 on a cart behind my main chair, it's right at the back of the room and has the electronics on the bottom. TV tuner, quadrupler, HTPC etc... It projects over my head. Nice neat package.
They are a great machine. Especially when combined with a PS2/PS3 for games and Bluray.

Alright. It seems I will need to show you my *space* in more detail.
What I consider to be my space, the room where I spend most of my time in is quite optimized already. As you can see it is not just an empty void waiting to become decorated. It is a thoroughly tried setup which has evolved under a period of several years into its current configuration of practical living and working.
I and Camilla live in a two room appartment sized around 64 square meters, consisting of a bedroom, a living room, a ktichen space with aditional dinner space. A sort of typical Swedish living quarter, unless you live in your own house on your own lot with garages, barns etc.
Have a look at my space, the 'living room', notice the SONY projector, and please advise me where to place it. Also consider that I need space reserved for occasional items such as larger TV, monitors, game cabinets and stuff that I sometimes work on. And this isn't my profession, it's just a hobby.

Dang that a tight space kinda makes me glad I moved my work space out of my theater space
FYI the picture tube in that one pic is a pending death sentence get that sucker in a box pronto as if it implodes it can kill you
If you was in the us I would take it but its too costly to ship overseas

Now you understand why I cannot keep this awesome piece of technology.
Our "theatre space" would be the bedroom, I've installed a regular modern DLP projector (Acer H5370BD) there and a large white-board. There I can relax and watch my fav movies and documentaries. I never watch normal TV.
The CRT on the wooden cupboard is my test-CRT. That's the way to store them really. I need a loose tube for quick chassi testing.

It is if someone carelessly bumps it(which can happen)
I keep my spare tubes on the floor(with a soft layer of material between them
And the floor) as it is less risk of them falling off and imploding
I had a friend who told me his neighbor had sat a tv on they're porch (in the sun and it winter) only to have the tube in the tv implode within seconds now had there been anyone around said tv it wouldn't have been good for them(they had just sat it down to unlock the door to bring the tv inside

So instead of using quote, its MUCH faster to scroll a few mm down and use quick reply box.
Its going to take a f***en big careless bump to knock that tube down. Sounds like your friend has a good imagination!! Left it on they are porch ( or their porch ) and it just imploded?

I'd better call my friend then. His 14" TV has been outside in an alcove beside the hot tube for 8 years

No, I don't.
Build a custom shelf to locate it above your printers in the corner of the windows, have a pull down screen for it hung from the ceiling. Easy!

As far as the story about the tube implosion I really wondered if it was true for years as I have had tvs and computer monitors stored in my work building and have yet to have one implode(they have been there for 5+ years) mostly now is the crt computer monitors(it is insulated)
Case really I made a mistake geeze cut me some slack I have been busy as I wanted to get in what computers I had to do as I have an appointment to go to(asthma) tomorrow

I have seen worse on other forums but I have been trying to break the habit as it has confused some members on the other forum I joined(even though it puts the quoted text in blue)
Sorry if it bugs you(I am currently typing this post on my iPhone 5 most of the time I check the forum on my laptop)
