Looks like I'm shooting right through on the I90. I need to google where Mt Rushmore is though, my stupid Garmin simply doesn't have it programmed in, as I found out last year when driving back from Cliff's.

Stalker! I will be leaving Atl on Mon. Dallas on Tue. Denver on Wed. Going back to Dallas Sat or Sun. I want to hook up with Phil on the way back. It would be kind of cool to see Haydn and Buen as well if they are amenable.
The only thing I would add is the Blue Ridge Parkway although it might be to far out of your way if you don't have enough time.

As for Cedia, plan on the AVS party Friday night. AVS has been uncharacteristically quiet about dinners on the other nights. I would guess there will be something on Thursday and Saturday will be a spur of the moment thing.

I was looking at the AVS site, and could find no mention of any dinner. Mind you I was dead tired, so maybe it was staring me in the face.
Time/place?

There's not much reason to do so, but if you end up taking 94 instead of 90, let me know!

You could drive right by my place on I80 - a couple of hours south of I90 - and join back up with I90, but fine... Be that way.
The Black Hills are pretty cool. My family is originally from South Dakota. I still have relatives there and spent lots of time there as a kid.
Here's what I'd try to see on your way through...
1) Badlands. Get off I90 at Hwy 240 - the Badlands Scenic Drive exit or something like that. Drive 240 through the park. You'll want to stop and take a few pictures and check it out... Weirdest geological sh*t you'll have ever seen. It's like a different planet. Seriously.
2) Wall Drug. 240 ends up back on I90 at Wall, SD, home of the famous Wall Drug. It's worth a 10-minute stop for a piss break and to grab a soda. Unapologetically tourist kitsch. Home of the "Jackalope". You'll see.
3) Mt. Rushmore. Set your GPS to Keystone, SD - Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse are about 5 minutes SW of Keystone. Signs everywhere. You won't have to spend long there if you're by yourself unless you want to watch the videos and stuff. It's pretty amazing if you're a geeky engineer type like we are.
4) Keep going on 244 to 87 - "Needles Highway". Very cool thing to see. Might even get lucky and catch a motorhome or tour bus navigating through the rock tunnel with a couple of inches to spare on both sides and the top.
5) Get back to 385 and follow it through Custer, up to Deadwood, then Lead (REAL, classic, rugged, old-west towns with tons of history).
6) I say Deadwood THEN Lead, because from there, head down 85 and catch US-14 Scenic, which takes you through Spearfish Canyon on a gorgeous drive, back up to Spearfish on I90, and you're back on your way.
Conservatively, that'll add four hours versus just flying straight through on I90, but it's totally worth it. One of the more beautiful drives in the country for sure. Not quite Grand Canyon, Rocky Mountain, or Yosemite, but definitely right up there.

+1 on all of this - may add a few hours, but totally worth it, and all within such a relatively small distance.

Perfect info, thanks! Funny, I open the local city rag at the car dealer while waiting for an oil change, and there is a pix of the Black Hills. Never heard about them until today.
Good info, keep it coming!

Well, if you're taking I-90 from Cliffy's to South Dakota, then you'll be going right through Austin, Minnesota... You know... Spamtown, USA.
Alternate route... You could take I-80 west through Iowa to I-29 north and catch I-90 in Sioux Falls to the Black Hills. That takes you through the Quad Cities, Iowa City, Des Moines, and Sioux City in Iowa, on the way to Sioux Falls, SD. Interesting side note: Besides being where I grew up, Sioux City is also the final resting place of Sergeant Floyd of the Lewis & Clark Expedition, and home to the Loess Hills, a glacial/geographic feature found only along the Missouri River in Iowa and Missouri, and in China.
Do I sound like Cliff Clavin, yet?
I'm not sure how far you like to drive in a day, but Sioux Falls is about 9 hours and change from Cliffy's place. 9 or 10 is about all I like to do in a day. My place is about 5 hours from Cliffy's, and about 4 hours from Sioux Falls. I think it's only 15 or 20 minutes longer than going through southern Minnesota on I-90. Des Moines might make a nice stop on the way. If you like barbecue, award-winning Smokey D’s BBQ is right on the interstate. Just sayin'.

The most driving I've done is 15 hours, but that was a bit insane. I can do 12 no problem. Funny thing is, I've driven away from my place so much now that the drive from Vancouver to south Oregon and Vancouver to Idaho is really boring. It gets exciting once I get past that.
I will refer to this thread a lot of times while on the road, and will post regarding my journey.

My trip just got abbreviated. I have to return to Miami in two weeks. I will probably only stay in Dallas a day or two and then come back to Atlanta for a day or two.

I have landed in Dallas. I went and took an eye exam today. I am wearing contacts and trying to get used to them now. I leave for Denver tomorrow. I haven't gotten a hotel yet. Curt if you need a room then give me a call or PM.

Give me an update via email when you are confirmed going to be in the area. I am about 45 minutes from Parker.
Might be able to make this dance.
Or, maybe you could swing by here on the way out. I'll pitch a tent in the back yard for you and give you some bug spray!!
Give you a chance to see the g90 in full operation!!
Oh and one more edit: I know you have been wanting to have a pair of Infinity RS-II gull wing speakers. Just so happens, I have a pair with you name on them!

Well, I didn't make it to f$#king Denver. My car broke down a hour outside of Witchita Falls. I got it back to my brother's place in Dallas. I guess I will see what the Mercedes stealership will charge to fix it.

Major bummer, Spanky!!!!!
We have more staff in the booth this year, so I'm hoping to get out on the floor a bit to see a few things, at least on the way to and from meetings. I'll try to snap a few photos for you. I'm sure Curt will take photos and will have plenty to talk about, too.
Sorry, man!

Sucks dude! I am in Denver, am about to head over to the convention center to check out parking prices, and to see if it's cheaper to cab it tomorrow.
Am not taking the camera today, but will tomorrow and will shot a crapload of pix that I'll upload.
Uneventful trip so far, the 80MPH speed limit was very appreciated! Stopped in to see Red Rocks at dusk, need to go back on Saturday to take more pix since I NEVER REMEMBER TO BRING MY TRIPOD!!
