Here's a discovery that I made by fluke a couple of minutes ago.

I have a pile of 9" tubes that are used, and in very good shape. I wanted to throw my best tube into a 1209s I'm working on, and had three tubes in LC chambers that I couldn't detect any wear on.

I recently purchased an Ultraviolet LED flashlight on eBay that detects pet urine to see how it worked (I saw my local carpet cleaner guy use one, so I bought one on impulse on eBay last week for $13.)

So, for fun, I wondered if that light might react with phosphor, and sure enough, I found one tube that looked perfect to the eye, but showed a small area wear pattern on one of the tubes, and it was easy to find the tube that had almost no wear via that flashlight.

So, if you deal with a fair number of tubes like I do, or regularly upgrade CRT projectors via Craigslist, a $13-15 investment might pay off quickly. I'm buying another UV flashlight to keep on the bench!

I just ordered one Curt. I got my eBay bonus bucks today so I figured I'd spend it on a UV LED flashlight. Can't wait to try it.

Yeah, a lot of people don't know what eBay bucks are. A couple years ago eBay invited me to join the program. Basically I get 1% eBay bucks back on almost every purchase I make on eBay. There are no fees or catches and it's totally free. eBay just gives me 1% on everything I buy. The only sorta catch is that you have just a few weeks (or maybe a month) to use the credit. But you can use eBay bucks towards any purchase on eBay.

Hi,

I've built an UV-Tester from an old EPROM eraser and a new 4W blacklight tube.
My experiences are as follows:

- Excellent for determing the wear on blue tubes. Even the slightest patterns will be prefectly visible.
- Still OK on bare green tubes or those with clear C Elements. Less reaction, so seeing patterns is harder.
- Very difficult on green tubes with green C Elements. The C Element absorbs a lot of the intensity.
- Very difficult on bare red tubes or those with clear C Elements. Almost no reaction and nothing to see.
- Impossible on red tubes with red C Element. The filtering seems to absorb everything.

Still a handy tool! Thanks for the idea!

I tried to look for wear on the tubes in a PG6+ with my old EPROM eraser (in total darkness, lenses off), and I couldn't make out any pattern. Is this is a good thing or am I missing something? I can't see wear with a normal LED flashlight.

Hi,

When I first tried with the unmodified device I couldn't see any reaction on the tube faces. Therefore I replaced the UV tube with a black light version of the same size. Now it isn't an EPROM eraser anymore but a black light lamp in an unusual case...
