Recently moved back home from college and there has been some tension brewing about the big CRT spaceship thingy. When I moved home, my dad came out to help and completely forgot how big the projector was. We tensed a bit about it coming into the house and he finally gave in after two weeks of it sitting in my car.

I would really like to bring my dad in on this thing. He always wanted a home theater and this is something we could do together. However, he is a little more stringent on this one than expected. He is adamant about it not messing up his own "setup" in our unfinished basement. The place is crammed with stuff and I am working really hard to clear most of it out. Anyone have any suggestions on how I could better persuade him to go along with me on this? Please help.

Is he a money guy? Point out that it makes a similar (or better) picture than what many stores are selling for $1500 and up - and yours is already paid-for. Pull on the heart strings and point out that you were hoping it could be something the two of you could enjoy together, whether sports, movies, or whatever you might both enjoy.

Also, seeing is believing. It's one thing to talk about it; it's a whole other thing to actually see it. Do a rough setup when he's not around, get it looking good with a nice-size image size, and say, "Well, what do you think?" My wife didn't get the idea of it until I set it up in our living room. When she first say the projector, her attitude was "you're insane". When she first saw it in our living room projecting on a bed sheet and we watched a couple of movies, it switched to "Yeah, OK - that's pretty awesome - how long until the the theater is done?"

Other than that, do you have Blu-ray yet, or are you still using DVD? If you don't have a BD player yet, you can pick one up from craigslist for $30-40, and you can buy a used HD Fury around here probably another $50. It's a such a massive improvement in picture quality, there's really no comparison.

The first priority is getting it on the roof. They look a lot smaller up there than in your car or blocking a hallway... My wife had serious reservations when I first got the PG+ (which is small for CRT) until I got it the projector on the ceiling and after a few weeks she stopped noticing it as much. Now she sits under it to steal the sweet spot.

This is a great hobby if he likes the idea of having a theatre and it's something you can do together (especially lifting!). The great thing is if you move away again and take it with you, he can use all the bones so you're doing him a favor. Other than the roof mount and 2 holes to support your screen, you aren't going to disturb anything. Since it's unfinished you can even run your speaker wire in the walls so when he does finish it, it's already done. Any money put into a setup will only help him later.

If you are going to "surprise" him by clearing out the space make sure you don't "mess it up". You'll want him to be for it and not thinking you are just messing with his stuff. All you need is enough room for a couch, rug and coffee table. So long as nothing interferes with your projector throwing an image you can still have stuff piled all around.

I'm currently setting up again (finally!) in my finished basement, but on the off chance we move again due to wifey's job I can't make a huge mess on the ceiling. I grabbed a 3 foot long 2X10 and put nine 3.5" screws in (3 in each roof joist) and bolted the mount to that. If I have to take it down later it will be easy to fill the small screw holes. I'll take pictures when I get back down there during the week to pick at it some more.

Ahh, CRT Basics 101 is coming back to me. The sports pitch would probably work very well. He is very much into watching vintage sports games (anyone else do this?). An already paid for model is also a good pitch.

Yup, totally right. Have to do that soon. Seriously though, there is getting to be so much shite that this may be very very difficult. Yes, its getting that bad. Please pray for me. Sad Will find a way though. One day/carload out at a time Very Happy

I've been thinking about the ceiling mount. We have a support beam running right through the middle of the house that would be perfect for that, but the entire process is already mind boggling to me. The idea of us lifting one of those things over my head already boggles my mind. The rack like mounts on here look the easiest for getting a CRT up there. Thoughts? How did you do this?

How big of a screen are you going to use
When I first set my home theater up my mom and dad had to be convenced(I did a 60 inch screen at the time)once they both seen the life sized picture they were saying I should have done it bigger(currently have a 10 foot screen that can handle both 4:3 and 16:9)

When football seasion comes around my dad always asks if we can watch it on the huge screen

When football seasion comes around my dad always asks if we can watch it on the huge screen Laughing (we are big football fans) and once they both watched a blu ray movie(life of pi was the first I watched on my crt projector)they didn't have nothing negitive to say about the 100 pound beast that sat just behind my couch(still have my dlp hanging from the ceiling)

I am the only one in my family to have this kind of setup and I am envied by everyone
Mr. Green Thumbs Up Very Happy Very Happy my cousins love to play video games at life size once I got everyone in the family hooked they can't stop wanting to watch movies, tv or play games(FYI wii sports on the bowling is like having your own personal bowling alley) I have had two of my uncles and one aunt see my setup(pre crt though) and they loved the huge screen though none have the room for a set up like this(one maybe)

Me and my mom and dad watched the Super Bowl on my home theater(man that was amazing Thumbs Up )

One other thing you could do, is paint it white like the ceiling color.
Would blend in and not stick out so much.

I have my Marquee 9500 painted white, most people look at the screen and say, "Where is the picture coming from?"
I point at the projector, and they just go "Ohhh, didn't see it"

Cheers

Nice speakers Steve Wink

Contemplate changing the D.A.F. to D.I.L.L.I.G.A.F. instead, and see how he likes that Laughing

UncleWill, I'd take a different approach. I'd start bringing home the dirtiest, scummiest hos you can find, introduce them to dad as your new girlfriend(s). Tell him that you're depressed that you've abandoned your CRT hobby and are depressed about it.

He'll see the light and will come around quickfast. Smile

I've got a 115" Draper Luma at 4:3. Most of our sources (for now) use this aspect ratio.

Thanks Guy's, Much appreciated.

I have 5 Martin Logan speakers, I love them, and never change them.
Work really well with my M&K subwoofer.

Hope you can find some common ground with your Dad, so you can enjoy the fantastic world of CRT together.

Cheers
