I know that horrible experience first hand as my cousin decided to tinker with my Ecp when I wasn't around(had the top off to track down the high voltage leak and those are a pita to get back right(especially after curt had them correct before be shipped my the set as it took me hours to get it back the way curt had it because they wasn't marked and the set has different model tubes in it I will say this its something I DON'T want to do again until I get the 07ms tubes(doubt I will have to adjust it afterwards though)
But I warned my cousin NOT to even think of messing with the nec or it would lead to a possible early death for him(I know a bit harsh but he hasn't touched it since just uses the remote then its only to turn it on or off (thank goodness))
I only tinkered with the g2 knobs on a projection tv(to compensate for old tubes in the set) and then it was just a slight adjustment(wanted to get a tad brighter picture while still keeping the true black of the tv(shawdow detail improved big time)
But I doubt I will ever touch the g2 knobs on the nec(ever)as the set give a true white right now on white images
Also I noticed last time I had the video input(no signal) the red tube went full bright as if the brightness was turned up(never have it happen on the rgb) one time it was the green tube that went full bright ever since I haven't wanted to select the video input due to that but the lettering still showed and I hadn't pulled any boards at the time it did this(for inspection and cap replacement)
But with a signal the lettering would get shaky on all three tubes(didn't test the video/s video input before I lost video along with the convergence grids(none show)
I am wondering if its the gain board in the set going nutty?

the only fan swap worth doing would be to bigger fans...
in general, the fans are silent to begin with, it's all about the turbulence. You could swap in "quieter" fans for x amount of dollars, or just use a 1 dollar resistor to accomplish the same. Quieter fans simply move less air.
It's likely a bad idea, but at this stage of the game..who cares?
If you can extract the heat from around the projector (for ceiling mount) somehow, that would help a lot, and make the fan mod much easier on the projector. If it's floor mount, then I think you can slow the fans with less risk...just watch one movie at a time.

The only thing I think I will mod will be the power supply fan mounts I put spacers between the fans and the metal housing and it helped some(better then how it was) but I am going to get some rubber fan mounts to make this beast close to dead silent(the chassis fans are pretty quiet as is though since I do not have the set ceiling mounted I have to reverse the fans in the bottom
The fan under the plastic shroud(the other I have flipped over for air intake) looks like I ain't just going to be able to remove the screws and turn it around as it has a shroud over it(which is under the red tube and looks to be a pita to get to without removing the tube) so can I just change the polarity of the fan(not sure if doing this will work) but now the set has great air flow from the one fan I was able to turn around(just have to have the set elevated off of the table(also makes the bottom fans quieter ) but I have to have the back of the set raised anyway to line the picture up with my screen so I don't have to use keystone(not that it matters on the image quality just don't like using it)

I reckon axial fans are the go for anywhere they blow onto something, if you can fit them. They move considerably more air and more evenly.
It expect you could trick the set into thinking all fans are running by using one or more original fans and looping the 3rd wire to all the other points.

given there is three fans that has a speed sensor it might be a easy feat but i am not sure on the size YET but i am going to see how quiet the set is after i swap out the screws on power supply fans for rubber fan mounts before i start swapping out the other fans that sucker is a chunk to lug no wonder the projector is so heavy in the front you have the tubes and power supply weighing it down luckly its got handles on the sides
i can't wait to get it back to fully working so i can enjoy it and do the tube swap on my ecp(swapping out my red and green sd187 tube for 07ms tubes since the blue tube is a 07ms hopefully the high voltage power supply doesn't crap out in the set)
not sure if i will keep the sd187 tubes or not since i don't have a matching blue tube
i will end up with four sd187 tubes two each in red and green but no blue tubes oh well if i can't get a blue tube for each set of red and green tube i may see if anybody else wants them(if i don't decide to keep them and get a couple blue tubes)
