I recently got a nec 10pg and while i was setting it up the convergence grids went black Shocked (i thought it was odd) so I exited out to see if I still had video from the rgb nothing just the white lettering from the menu and info dialog
Its like it comes and goes I have checked"most" of the boards and haven't seen any bad caps(unless I am missing something)
I wish I could get pictures to upload so i could show how it is doing exact

So nec owners I need HELP

Seen bad caps??? Who said youd see them?

Are they original ones?

If so, they are rooted and you need to change them now.

I recently changed out 350 capacitors on my 10PG. I can honestly say that most of the bad caps I found could not be visibly diagnosed as such. More than half of the caps in the projector were bad or on their way out. The degradation of the caps will occur regardless of the number if hours on the machine. My unit had only 800 hours of run time and would not sync any input signals before the rebuild.

THis is a system board issue most likely. Pull the point board out to see if the grid comes back. You DO have leaking caps, as Zolzar says, you need to get an ESR meter:

I have this one, and use it almost daily when working on boards:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/CAP1B-Capacitor-Wizard-ESR-Meter-100khz-Tester-Test-Capacitance-in-Circuit-NEW-/161028381250?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item257e0a1a42

The cheaper ones on eBay will work as well, but I got better than bottom of the line.

Funny but the odd thing is the set worked ok for two days before it did this(I also have an electrohome ecp4101 which I am using now till I get the nec fixed as I only got to see the set at its fullest one time and I am hooked)

I wi most likely replace them reguardless since the set is acting like it is(I don't have it far enough from the screen to use the screen with the projector so i would have to look at the tubes to tell if pulling the board would work or not)

Still waiting on the tubes for my Ecp along with the hdfury(I think the bias board is going nutty in my Ecp as I noticed a arc spot on it and both the red and green tubes take a bit to get sharp)

I have seen that so I need to know where the board is the the video inputs in the front of the set(unless that one board works all then I am good)

I did not do the power supply under the projector. I honestly ran out of steam after recapping the boards. Probrably not a bad idea but It will be something I tackle later.

Since mine powers up I may save it for last also once I do the boards in the set if it is more trouble for me to do it I may send them to curt and have him do it

Actually I did recapped two power supplies so far, and they also had bad caps inside just like the other boards of the machine, and both worked before the procedure. A refurbished power supply means cleaner output voltage to all boards, and may help shorten 'warm up' time when we talk about drifting for example. Also if a power supply goes out because of whatever reason it could literally ruin the whole set, if you have a bad day, so I think it is definitely a good idea to keep the PS fit too.

The input board where you plug your cables contains no active parts, so unless you pulled out the internal cables it should work .

I haven't been around the part of the set inside yet but I am going to check it also to see if something has possible been pulled loose

I have been checking over the boards and haven't seen any leaking caps so far

The thing is they leaking towards their legs. If you remove some random caps you'll see that where the legs go in to the case they are wet, just a tiny drop, but they are getting wet.
I guess the projector wasn't fired up for a long time. So the electrolyte probably degraded, with this water aggregates from the electrolyte. Now that you began to play with the machine the capacitors warmed up with the boards and the internal pressure increased due to the improper electrolyte configuration so the electrolyte comes out now on the old seals. The most of the leaking process probably just begun right there right now. This is not the whole truth though, as the caps are dying without even turning them on, but now they are dying in an increased speed.

Ok I have checked the set over and the only leaking cap I see is on the video output board the rest look ok should I still replace them as some are in a tight spot and I'd hate to ruin the board just to replace the said cap(the one on the video output board is a large one(I think) and is fairly easy to get to(considering I have to pull the board to get to it)

If the system board is failing wouldn't that make it so I couldn't see the menus on the screen(which is what I only see after about a half of use before I started checking boards)
The only bad cap that has visible leakage is one on the video output board may be more considering how the set acted before I shut it down)

Edit update I pulled the point board and the grids are still a no show(I still suspect the video output board as the issue)

The profile for rgb shows 480p but the v h scan rates are higher then what 480p would be so I don't think I have a scan issue(just need to clear out the profile of the name it has but more on that later once I get the video output fixed)

Also there is a solid line which runs across the top of the screen of all three tubes unless I press one the tube buttons on the remote(not sure what is causing this unless its the video output board)
