Hi all,
I'm new to the world of crt projectors, and picked up an NEC 6pg , with just on 5000 hours on the clock, for almost nothing.
I used this forum and Curt's incredibly helpful advice, and have been delighted by the pictures i was able to produce - have to admit, i spent more time, and got more enjoyment out of the setup procedure than actually watching anything, but the kids love it, and call it "the magic".
Anyway, today, whilst palying with setting it up for different inputs (720p for xbox, and 480p for a dvd player) i suddenly got a major problem with the blue tube.
Focus and convergence still seem fine, but the tube seems "stuck" on full brightness and, from reading some of the other posts here, it appears to be what Curt referes to as over voltage supply.
My question is, does this effectively mean the thing is toast, is is there a troouble shooting process for the unskilled?

How do you mean the blue "stuck" at full brightness? Does the machine shut down with any error code? If not, push 'kelvin' and let's see if there is any effect of the B/W adjustments on the blue.

Thans for the quick reply!
I did try to adjust kelvin, and neith the b or tje w make any difference.
From my mix of enthusiastic ignorance and forum reading i am guessing a bad capacitor on the deflection board, but have no idea how to test this.

No, no you're on the wrong path, you can trust me
Deflection circuit does not alter the brightnes at all, and a problem would affect all three tube at the same time.
While the blue neckboard failure is somewhat common problem on these machines, this usually causes a fully lit up tube, regardless of input material, but the projector goes to protection mode and shut itself down, and generates an error code at the LED display. To verify this you'd have to swap boards inside the machine though.

Oh, thank you, that saved me a lot of wasted time.
No error code on led, and no auto shutdown, i have been shutting it down, as i am worried about the brightness on the blue.

To test the neckboard, flip up the deflection board, remove the metal shields at the end of the tubes. Remove the blue neckboard (you don't have to remove the tubes for this, and I suggest to remove the two screws from the neckboard's heatsink which are holding the metal clamp of the tubeneck) so you can slide off the board towards the back of the machine. Put the blue neckboard on the green tube and see if the problem follows the blue neckboard. If the neckboard is bad, Curt probably can repair it for you, or has spare on stock, it is not a big deal.
I think we can't find out more without swapping the boards.

Gjaky has you on the right path, but pulling those CRT sockets/video amps off the back of the tubes is a PITA without taking out the screws that hold the tubes in place, and sliding them forward. There's no room behind the tubes to pull the video amps off.
Take the two Philips screws and two long slot blade shafts off of the metal plate over the tube/lens holders, and then you can move the tube forward an inch or two to better access the CRT sockets.

So i managed to get the two boards off - some challenges with the screws being quite soft, and very firmly set, but got there, only to bugger up the cable exchange - pulled the "og" cable right of the board. I thought it was just a stubborn plug, turns out it was wires crimped to soldered pegs.
I have very limited soldering skills, but will give it a go.
Don't suppose you have a couple of these little boards for sale do you Curt?

So the good news is, i went ahead and connected the old blue board to the back of the green tube, fired it up with no board on the blue tube, wasn't sure if it would even start. It did, and the green tube then did exactly what the blue was doing.
So at least i now know what the problem is.
Now, anyone got any ideas how to fix it, or where i could possibly get a replacement(s) in australia?
Thanks for your help Curt and gjacky.
Have kind of gone backwards, but feel like i've learnt a bit, and now know where my problem is.
