Short story:
I got this unit around a year ago. The guy said it was flakey and would cut out from time to time. I resoldered the SMTP board as instructed on the advance tips page and got it stable. I believe he was running it off of S-VIDEO.
I don't have an S-VIDEO card so I haven't tried that.
I bought an adapter set from monoprice that included RGBVH BNC connectors to DB15.
After soldering the SMTP the adjustment panel comes up fine. When I launch the Adjustment panel from the wired remote I can fiddle with all the settings and I see all 3 tubes kick in.
The only problem is I cannot get port 4/5 to work.
When I hit 4 or 5 I get a black screen.
I also read somewhere that selecting button 6 will combine 4/5. This also does not produce an output.
When I first got it up and running I would see a projected image which produces a one second short flicker of my laptop desktop before going to black.
Now, I can wait 10min or so for it to be off and when I try to reproduce the effect nothing comes up, just the back image.
I've tried various resolutions from 480p up to 1600x1200 and nothing sparks an image.
Any suggestions or hints appreciated.

Do you mean page 52 of the Barco 801s Install manual? It says something about a switch on a board located.. somewhere..
It references S1 Force Neg. Sync (ON = yes)

This advice is probably right. You need to make sure that you are using negative sync and if you cannot set that aspect you may need Video Processor or something of that nature to change the sync from positive to negative.
Before you do anything check that the resolution and refresh you have set is not beyond what the projector can sync to.

I took out the card based on the pic in the install manual and set the force neg. sync to ON. It was off.
Booted it up and no picture still.
Also I was told there's a high pitch sound coming from the unit.

I changed the laptop to 1280x720. Is that within range?
All of the advanced card settings for resolution use 60Hz
Also was that the correct switch to use?
Thanks!

Just use a basic vga setting 640 X 480 or 1024 x 768
The switch you mention I believe only takes the auto detect feature off line and tells the projector to simply make the sync negative it does nothing to what ever you are feeding it.

1024x768 is only resolution that usually works also with positive sync. So try that first.
Other resolutions need syncs chanced to negative from video card driver or with Powerstrip software.
Some external line driver box is one option. Extron or Barco or something.
That sync switch affect only to port3, and it doesn't work every time.

Thank you for your responses I will try to tackle this tonight when I get home after work.
How are people getting upwards of 1080i? External devices such as Moome and HDFury?
Is there anyway to get this resolution without an external device?
Thanks again.

getting 1080i from a desktop computer is easy, either with powerstrip or straight from the drivers, at least on my nvidia cars its an option there. on laptops its not that easy.
I have used 801s daily for a few years at 720p, difference in picture to 1080i is not big and i prefer 720p on port 3 (that takes positive sync but you have to make or buy a special cable).

I'm making a cable.
I bought two solder ends and last night I stripped both ends of a cat 5e cable that has a ground running through it.
So 9 wires.
Either way this is going to give me a picture!
I'll try to crank it down to 1024 x 768 on the BNC connector first.
Then I'll give the soldering job a go if that doesn't work.
Anyone know what the high pitched sound might be? Sorta concerned about that.

I am not sure if a cat5e cable will meet the crosstalk and bandwidth requirements for using as an RGB cable, but mostly it is not matched in impedance, you might get a picture, but surely it will introduce some ghosting.

1024x768 worked!
15DB to RGBVH.
Raster is all messed up however. I can't seem to get convergence. I change one area and it throws the neighboring out of whack.
The lenses also need some TLC.
How would I get 1080i on this?

You need to start from scratch and do a mechanical setup before any electronic convergence etc. There is more than enough information on this site for you to be able to do that.
In terms of 1080i you could use your PC or laptop with the appropriate software some of which has already been mentioned or if you want to connect a blu ray player to it directly you will need a Mux-HD or a HDFury to strip HDCP and provide an anologue signal for the projector.
http://www.curtpalme.com/newsletters/Newsletter_July_8_2008.shtm
You could use the scaling ability of the Blu Ray payer to give you 1080i or better still a Video Processor.
Depends what sort of end result you want and how much you want to spend.

Generally speaking, doing one area of convergence should not throw a neighboring one out of whack, the data is driven by different chips for each zone. Having said that, everything is possible in a 20+ year old set, including problems I've never seen before.
KM above is right. Read the manual, do the mechanical setup first, and if you still have convergence issues, post some pix of the test grid. Your convergence board may be bad, and I may still have some working spares.

Thanks Curt. I'll have to give this thing the once over.
The borders are off and tilted, skewed you could say. I'll read the manual and see what can be done.
The edges are really off.
Maybe I'll post a pic, save myself the thousands words.
