Okay, have a big question here. Lets get the facts out.

Display hardware:

-Stock Electrohome 8500 Ultra w/ P43 Phosphor (I am assuming we all know the color configs). All video to this machine is run solely through one RGHV 5BNC input.
-TVone CHD1600 running composite, component, and SVideo over RGBHV on 5BNC. Current scaled at SXGA (1280x1024). The scaler offers adjustments on saturation, brightness, and contrast.

Video Sources:
DVD - Phillips DVP3960 running directly to scaler at raw 480i over Component. Has adjustments on contrast.
LD - Pioneer D704 running directly to scaler over composite
A/V Receiver - Pioneer D704S running directly to scaler over composite to SVideo adapter

So, here is the question about calibration that never seems to be addressed.

Which piece of hardware in the chain should be the default for configuring image display settings?

My projector, scaler, and DVD player all have settings that allow changing some part of the image quality but I never know which one to adjust for a proper calibration. Should I start with the DVD player and then move to the scaler, or should everything be set on standard and then calibrate using one piece?

Another question: Is there a way to setup this system so that the projector detects the settings for each source? I remember fooling around with ASR a long time ago but could never really grasp it all.

As Ken Whitcomb told me, always start with calibrating a projector then work your way back. So there is no default.
ASR should be off, it causes more problem than it fixes. My suggestion is you send a fixsd resolution to it and nothing else. It will make calibrating way easier and more fun. People like Craig, ChadB and Ken spend hours upon hours getting them right for one resolution.
