|
|
Hi everybody,
I am using a modded NEC 10PG on an mildly curved AT screen. Recently the point convergence board died, but to me the pictire is still acceptable. I also have a second machine as spare. Both units have really good tubes.
Now I could get a Marquee 9500LC Ultra, seller says it's a VDC built ca.2004, mild masks, plus 1 blue and 1 redThomson tube with a modded b Board no masks. Don't know it the c-elements are coloured.
I have been using and fixing NECs eversince and feel pretty familiar with the PGs. Never seen a Marquee yet. I think I would change if:
1 light output is at least as much as with the 10PG
2 colours are not too much worse. Hope this can be coped with the PC colour management which is already used to calibrate the 10PG
3 the Marquee gives hope to be more reliable with respect to recent repots of dieing caps in the older PG sets
Changing the projector mount, rebuilding the hush box, getting familiar with Marquee specific setup, researching about usefull mods (miose, cooling, picture quality) - this all means some effort. But if this means I won't have trouble ahead because the Marquees are more reliable than the old PGs, then its probably worthwhile to check out. What do you think? Is there an advantage to the Thomson tubes?
Thanks
hansilili

Hi,
1 light output is at least as much as with the 10PG
-> Absolutely: 1300 peak lumens vs. 1000.
2 colours are not too much worse. Hope this can be coped with the PC colour management which is already used to calibrate the 10PG
-> Although I would recommend a red C-element (the green one is standard on the Marquee), I've seen stock machines running without and the picture was still ok without CMS after delicate G2 and gain adjustments.
3 the Marquee gives hope to be more reliable with respect to recent repots of dieing caps in the older PG sets
-> If the Marquee is from 2004 You should be quite safe. And it should be easier to get parts if needed...
One note on the Thomson tubes. These are more or less worthless if You don't have the following:
- A complete set of Thomson tubes
- An old style HVPS as they require a higher voltage (40KV instead of 34.9KV)
- Neck boards for the Thomson tubes
- A very clean HV cable routing in order to avoid arcing (due to higher voltages)
Mixing Thomson tubes with regular P19LCP is not an option. And I've read somewhere that they wore out quite quickly...

I had Electrohome, and still have NEC so I think I can give some insight.
A stock marquee don't have red C-element, only green, while the NEC have both, while the C-element is the same in both machine but it is a royal PITA to remove from the NEC.
The raw bandwidth of the Marquee is much higher than the PG's. Going to marquee from a NEC will give you the impression that you lost the control over the geometry adjustments, the marquee have far less adjustments for both geometry and convergence (maybe problematic for your curved screen).
I am not sure about the thomson tubes, because the very first series of marquee 9000s were equipped with real thomson tubes that used 40kV HVPS that went bad quite often for this reason. While the newer tubes using still thomson made coils (that can bee seen through the holes) but the raw tube is panasonic (what you don't see directly). In theory the tubes from the 10PG also could work in the Marquee, but I guess no one did this yet...
Anyway do you have lens for curved screen? That would help for the NEC too.

Thanks for your replies,
So Thomson isnt' realy better (don't know why I hat the impression) only different? And can't be mixed with Panasonic.
Would be interesting to know if 10PG tubes fit into an 9500 ultra. If so, then I could swap the red tube assembled with the C-element. Curt, that possible?
I use GT17 lenses with the NEC already and live with the compromise of smearing optical edge focus.
Cheers

You would have to pull the NEC tubes from its housing that's for sure, if the original tubes in the marquee are not that bad, I wouldn't bother with that, I just mentioned the tube swap as a theoretical posibility.
There are some quite nice lenses for curved screens: 'Manakin' lenses and there is a 'HD10 R05' or something like that.
PS.: If you'll have too much spare PG10s I would be happy to be the first who tranplants a PG xtra in the PG10 chassis

Where'd you guess that from?

If You're using the HD10-GT17 lenses, then there is a good chance that the NEC's C-Elements can be 'transplanted' to the Marquee. At least their curvature should be compatible. It only depends on the NEC's housings and the way the C-Elements are mounted...

All projection tubes are similar.
To operate a tube you'd need:
-the proper HV for the Anode (usually around 34kV on all modern tubes) ..so done
-the proper bias voltage on G2 ..this isn't a problem either as in most case the G2 have a very wide setting range.
-the proper driving voltage between G1 and cathode, this is similar on all tubes (you can verify this by looking at all kind of neckboards and you'll see all of them operating from the similar powersupply voltages)
The only remaining thing is the pinout of the different tubes, that's all.

GeorgeSong used NEC tubes in a Marquee im sure of it, they were from a GP5000 i think.

how much is the marquee ?
if you can score a good deal, definitely take it
going up the a1 north anytime soon ? you can drop in for a coffee at my place and have a look at my (not yet properly set up) 9500lc
i recently discovered they are great projectors and really nice to work on
if you don't want it...i might take it.

My opinion is that you should keep the NEC over the Marquee. You have spare parts for the NEC already, and the Marquee will not be more reliable anyway.
