|
|
I am going to hang a pair of speakers horizontally in a 7.1 set up in the rear back surround position, I have a pair back there now but they are small AR's and the speakers I am replacing them with are 4 foot long and weigh 75 pounds. I like them hanging there it just works well in my room. The question is this, Do I hang them with the mids and tweeters in the center of the listening area OR with the mids and centers on the outside edges with the woofers projecting in the center of the listening area. There will be about a 2 foot space between the two speakers. These speakers look like the ones Kal posted in a previous thread.
EXAMPLE
W W W M T M (2 feet) M T M W W W OR M T M W W W ( 2 FEET ) W W W M T M

What do you really hope to accomplish? I think hanging large towers horizontally is generally a generally a bad idea. Who knows what the dispersion pattern on the towers is like, and it what it will do sitting up close to the ceiling. Besides, surround channels are normally used for "ambience", so it's usually noisy, reflected, reverberant sounds. Practically any decent bookshelf speaker with good frequency response and dispersion will work well for HT, so hanging a 75-pound 4-foot tower horizontally will look goofy, and I'm not sure it will really accomplish much.
If you really insist on doing it, then I'd arrange it with the LF drivers on the inside and HF drivers on the outside for best separation, unless that will put the tweeters very close to an adjacent wall, in which case, I'd reverse it.

No point being pessimistic; it probably would't work anyway.
