|
|
Hey everyone I just got my first CRT projector. It is a NEC PG9 Plus. I got this along with another PG9 Plus and a PG9 Extra both for parts or whatever. Also included was a HD Fury, a nice Pronto universal remote, a Pioneer CDL-S201 laserdisc player, and extra set of lenses for the PG9 Plus, a ceiling mount, RGB cables and more. I got all this for trading an old mountain bike I never use anymore and a small three wheel peddle car. Not a bad trade I think. Anyway the guy had the projector mounted on his ceiling and it projected a wonderful image. I got everything home and started on the setup. I am going to floor mount the projector because I want to mount a digital projector on the ceiling also. I downloaded the install and user manual from Curts website, I have switched the wiring to display the image correctly when the projector is sitting on the floor and now I can seem to get an image to display. Every time I select the RGB input and try to run my DVD or bluray player is gives me a message of invalid signal. What all is going on? Any suggestions? Someone told me that I should start from scratch on setting up the projector, is this true? To display the image higher up on the wall can i tilt the projector up or do I just have to raise the projector and keep it level? This is my first CRT projector to setup and would love any advice, tips or help on getting it up and running please? I have setup hundreds of digital projectors but this CRT is a different animal smile.gif
Thanks,
Paul Kepner

Yes, with the NEC you do need to start from scratch. The good and bad news: The PGs are nice little sets, the Xtra being newer and brighter/sharper than the Plus units. Everything depends on tube condition, pull the lenses off the fronts of the sets and check the condition of the blue and green tubes. Whatever is the best set is what you should work with.
The bad: The Plus units are now getting pretty old, and there's a lot of posts here about defective capacitors on boards. Once the caps start leaking, you cna spend lots of time repairing the units (if you're handy with a soldering iron), and sometimes they come back to life, sometimes not. THe Xtra is about 4 years newer, and doesn't have the cap issues of the Plus sets... yet.
Thing is, if the projector was working at the last owner's place, then there's no reason for it not to work now.
So first off, what is your signal flow from the source to the projector. And, if you're using HDMI/HDFury, do you have the power supply for the Fury? That's mandatory in order for it to work. Also, check the placement of the H and V cables coming out of the Fury, If they are backwards, you'll get no pix, and that 'incompatible signal' message.

Try this:
DVD or Bluray----HDMI.cable------>HDFury(with.power.supply)====RGBHV.cable.to.Projector=====9PG+
Then try different reolutions, 480p, 720p 1080i. See if you get a picture

They are brilliant projectors i reckon, got a Plain here myself. The Plain and Plus seems to be very easy on tubes in my personal experience, i set mine up with near new tubes and its always been done right, still no visible wear yet.

you also need to register the signal when you start up.

Progress!!
I know it has been a couple of days since posting last but it has been pretty busy around here. Anyway the night I wrote my first post about the projector I was getting a bit frustrated about not getting a picture at all. I decided to unplug everything and start over on connecting the video path to the projector. The first thing I went to do was unplug the power supply to the HDFury and I was going to start unplugging everything else. It was amazing when I unplugged the power from the HDFury the HDFury light up blue and an image popped up on the screen! Just to test and see if it was a fluke I plugged the power back in and sure enough the image went away. I unplugged it and the image came back. Ok that is weird and I would like to know what is going on haha. OK now a new issue has come up. At first the image was bright and clear, although the convergence and alignment were off, after about watching a picture for about 10 minutes the image became darker? It got almost half as dark. What could be going on with this? One more thing does the projector have to sit perfectly level? I have the front end elevated about 4" higher than the rear to get the image up higher where I would like it. I noticed when I raised the front that the convergence went waaayy off. I tried to use the convergence controls but it didn't do much? Do these controls work differently than on the digital projectors or older projection big screen TVs? Thank you for everyone's help. I can't wait to get this projector dialed in!
Thanks,
Paul Kepner

It is a weird issue with the Fury, that's for sure! But that's HDMI for ya!
What I really would do is get a VGA to 5 BNC cable (you probably have one with the Fury, right?) and connect a laptop to the NEC. That way you avoid all the stuff with HDMI... for now.. while you get to know the projector and tweaking it in.
Run say 800 X 600 or 1024 X 768 from the laptop to the projector. That image should be stable for sync and for brightness. That way you can see if it's a projector issue or a source issue.
YEs, tilting the set is almost mandatory in most cases, and yes, since you're changing the angle of projection, your convergence will be off in areas. You can dial that back in, but you NEED TO READ THE MANUAL and do it IN SEQUENCE or you'll get all confused. Trust me, been there, done that.
I wrote this up to assist:
http://curtpalme.com/CRTSetupGuide.shtm
This is written for an NEC XG, but it's the same order for the PG series, there's just not quite as many menu options on the PG.
Dial the green in first... always.. and then the red over the green, then the blue over the green.. or red. Some people find it easier to dial in the blue over the red due to the bigger difference in colors. Just make sure the red is perfect over the green.
If the brightness keeps changing on the set with a laptop, you could have leaky capacitor issues...

I wonder if that's the correct power supply for the HDFury? It almost sounds like the polarity is reversed.

Either that or the power supply isn't capable of supplying the current and its pulling down the voltage too far.
Or its just f***ed...
Also, make sure you start with PHASE first on every convergence job you do. If you don't start there, you may as well forget the lot, cause its all based on that.

congrats on your "new" equipment
Sounds like you already did quite some work.
Just keep reading, there's a lot of information available, stuff you never knew you'd need or read.
