I hear what you are saying. I use both and for me CRT shines. There are Projectors here but you will need to keep looking. Most parts though are from the US.

It probably depends on what CRT projector you are using and what digital projector you were using, but there's nothing my Zenith 1200 (Barco Cine 8 Onyx) CRT projector did better than my current JVC RS56 digital. YMMV.

(EDIT: Moved to the CRT Projectors forum)

I agree. I switched to a JVC RS45 last summer, and really don't miss it much. The only two things I liked better on my tweaked G70 were A) complete lack of pixels, which your e-Shift machine also exhibits, and B) (mostly) complete black. The JVC black levels are excellent, but still not (almost) completely black like the G70. Still, the advantages (for me) far, far outweighed those two disadvantages. Just getting rid of the noise was total win. I love powering my theater up and having it remain quiet in the room. It's so great to hear quiet dialog without cranking the sound up, only to be blown out of the room in the next loud scene. A low noise floor is truly amazing! I always wanted a 'projection room' to have it quiet, but with these bigger newer machines, you don't even need one.

Great, now I don't know what to do. Confused I have one G90 and could have three more in less than a hour to do a stack blend. Shocked Of course, that is just plain nuts. Wink

Then there is Crabb and Kal, who say that they are ecstatic with their JVCs. Maybe it is time to run Forest run for the comfort of JVC. Laughing

I guess my indecision is only fair. I did push, prod and steamroll Crabb into spending the extra dough on the JVC. This is his revenge. Twisted Evil

Just depends on what you want to do with your time/money. If you want to be a hobbyist, and tweak, play, and you already have a G90, then why not play with the G90, even if just for six months, a year, or two? Especially if it's a bachelor pad and you're going to floor/table/stand mount for awhile.

The flip side, is if you want a very neatly installed system, you want it quiet, and you just want to watch movies and not dick with hardware, ditch the G90 while it's still worth something and get a b-stock JVC like I did.

See, I only got into CRT because back then, digital was expensive and the PQ sucked ass. Conversely, CRT was relatively inexpensive and the PQ was awesome; far superior in the price category I was playing in. It was no-brainer then, meaning 5 or 6 years ago. It's not as simple of a decision now.

But, like I said, you already have a machine... I'd probably just start out what what I have, but just maybe not go to the effort of ceiling mounting if you think you might want to switch in a year.

Tough call. Up to you to decide what's important to you.

+1. I got into home theater 20+ years ago but could only set up a real home theater with projection based system when I bought a house with a basement in 2000. At that time CRT was the only thing that gave me the picture quality I wanted. Digital was truly horrible.

Fast forward to today (or actually last year) and our new basement ceiling setup doesn't easily allow for CRT to begin with and digital has come very far. So I bought a digital. Other than some nicely tweaked 9" units (and even many of them), I think my RS56 looks better.

If I had a G90 right now in an HT that was still working well and the tubes were reasonable, there's no way in hell I'd be swapping it out. I'd be keeping it and use it.

Kal

That's the part you a crabb are missing. You both had [mostly?} stock 8" machines. They weren't up to the task of true 1080p anyway. Gozer had a really nice picture when he would work... I miss the black levels and some other small details. But with the Runco I have lighting up a 129" diagonal 2.37 screen with an Panamorph UH -480 lens, there's no contest, even the 9" machine couldn't do that size screen justice.

I in fact bought [2] VX300i because I thought I was going to have to stack them...not the case at all

Any one want a VX300i cheap? $5750?

No, we're not missing anything, Dave. I realize I could have had a 1080p pic with a 9" machine that was significantly better than the pic from my 8" machine, and it's quite clear that Kal is well aware of the same. But, that misses the point.

It's true that a 9" machine would have been much better than the G70 or Kal's Cine 8, but for me at least, the size, noise, complexity, and big setup commitment were much more than I was willing to undertake to bump up my image quality. Kal's problem was his room. He'd just done a beautiful interior finish on his basement, and regardless of the beam clearance issue he had, I have no doubt that the aesthetic impact was a consideration, too. A CRT projector would be a giant wart on an otherwise very clean basement finish. Some may love a big CRT projector on the ceiling. Others do not.

I've said before many times, but I'll repeat it: My love is for enjoying home cinema. I love the gear, but I love the movies more. The gear is part of the fun, but the ultimate goal is to watch movies. Again, that's not true for everybody. For me, the hobby isn't so much about the gear or the pursuit of on-screen perfection or nirvana. It isn't just about the audio or just the video. For me, it's all about the overall experience. In that respect, the JVC won hands-down. Of course, that's only based on my personal priorities; others will disagree, which is perfectly fine.

I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for CRT. I always dreamed of finding a G90 or a sexy 909 with beautiful aluminum HD10's throwing sharp scan lines on my screen at 1080p... But the idea started losing its appeal when I realized neither of those machines' prices were going to fall to anywhere I'd be be comfortable with paying for it, and digital has just gotten so damn good... Well, 'nuff said.

Speaking of overall experience, now that I've experienced how awesome a lowered noise floor is to my overall experience once I got rid of the noisy CRT, I'm actually looking at some audio upgrades.

We all have different priorities, so there is no "best" or "one size fits all" solution.

I have a feeling you would stick with a G90 for a good amount of time if it was setup to do its best. I'm quite picky with PQ, and my XG is by no means the perfect display for that, but its a damn good start. When I did get the rare chance to see a working barely used G90 in action at 1080p, it made me forget digital even existed.

I saw one of those newer JVC projectors, I think it was the RS-1 or RS-2 (old by now of course), and they were HUGE. From pictures they look rather small, but they aren't. They aren't as huge as a CRT, but for a digital, its an impressive size. I never did see that in action, but I have seen a G90, and they are worth the time as long as they behave.

If you can get 3 more of them in an hour, why not grab em? Unless they are costing more than it may be worth.

I'm envious of the 3 G90 chance you have Razz

You know I passed on 2 XG75's a couple of years back. Wonder if that was a good decision? Laughing
