Hey now.. My computer has an analog devices sound card in it, shhh
I will agree that yes, much of the older cheap stuff is indeed crap. However, I would debate that some of the older high end digital gear is still just as good as some current high end digital gear as well. I have heard some CDs sound their best in older CD players than newer high end CD players that are supposed to have superior new technology.
Now I personally am not really biased on analog vs digital, I like the sound of both, but at their best possible capability. I think digital has that capability even in the older components as well. But as you pointed out, they wont be the cheap components. Digital can sound like total crap if its being processed through crap, but then so can analog. Both are similar yet different. Properly setup, they are both excellent ways to enjoy audio.
Hope I made sense here because my mind is currently elsewhere as I typed this

Wonder what they mastered "Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms" on? That was 1985 and it was digital.
EDIT: here it is:
"Brothers in Arms was recorded from November 1984 to March 1985 at AIR Studios in Montserrat............Brothers in Arms was one of the first albums to be recorded on a Sony 24-track digital tape machine. The decision to move to digital recording came from Knopfler's constant striving for better sound quality. "One of the things that I totally respected about him," Dorfsman observed, "was his interest in technology as a means of improving his music. He was always willing to spend on high-quality equipment.''

I have one of these tucked away in my fathers basement in great condition... last time I saw it anyway. If you are still looking for one...what's it worth to you?
