I'm installing a new XE, and the best location for me is inside a cabinet that is open only on the front, with about 2" open space above the box. Is this okay, or should I be worried about heat issues?

I think you will be fine. It would be better if you could get some ventilation from the rear though. Any chance you can drill some holes or open up behind the XE?
A MINI packed that tight could be a problem, but the XE and XS have much better cooling.
