Hey, I am going to visit an old friend in a short while. He has an older Mitsubishi RP set. Not sure of the size or model number. Last time I visited him, I was able to get into the set-up menu and do a touch up on the convergence.

But, to tell you the truth, I forgot how I got into the set-up menu.

So, my questions are:

What is the quickest way to get to the set-up menu?

What can be done once in the set-up mode ( besides convergence)?

My friend is a smoker; besides cleaning the front panel, is it advisable to remove the back cover and clean the tube faces, mirror, or whatever?

It would really be cool to help "clean up" my friends TV as he loves that beast!

Thanks in advance!

All I can say to the above part is:

HELL YES! Mr. Green

Nicotine and HV is a terrible combination. I'll never forget servicing little old shutin chain smoker's TVs at the TV shop in the 80s. I'd spray a solid stream of Windex across the top of the CRT tube, and the droplets would be black by the time they got to the bottom.

Invariably, the little old ladies would always comment how bright the TV was when I took it back.

Then they phoned my boss and bitched that he sent a kid over to fix their TV. Effers! Thumbs Down Thumbs Down

Very Happy

Well, I can only imagine the crap that his TV has built up over the past ?? years. I know he has had it for a long time.

Ok, so, any suggestion as to removing the back panel and cleaning? Isn't there a mirror? Also, what should the inside of the display (screen?) be cleaned with? Is the display panel plastic or glass?

I would hate to start spraying some Windex on plastic and have it really screw it up.

Also, what is the pass code to get into the set-up menu?

Once in there, if I remember, there was not much more then convergence to really do anything with.

Thanks!

I don't know Mits' at all, but yeah, take off the screen or the back to gain access to the mirrors. I have yet to see Windex kill anything, but if you're concerned, get lens cleaner at a camera store.

That's really about all I can offer, sorry!

Don, just call me again when you have time. I know everything there is to know about Mits RPCRT.

You need to know the model number to get into the service menu. Mits changed the codes every year.

To clean the optics, don't ever go in through the back. Take the screen off the front. If the front panel goes across the entire front and is glossy black, it slides off to the right after you remove the two screws under the speaker grill. If the front panel is anything else, you just pull it off like you do a speaker cover on a regular speaker. Along the bottom of the screen are screws; take them out.

If the set has a glossy black cabinet than the screen pivots up from the bottom. If the cabinet is anything other than gloss black than the screen just pulls straight up. Clean the mirror and the inside of the screen. Remove the lenses and clean them and the celelemnts and pull out all the dead bugs sitting on the celelemnts.

Don't use Windex inside a Mits RPCRT. It will likely fog the lenses permanently. Use denatured alcohol as that will cut the smoke and not harm the optics.
