They are not dumping they are profiteering at those prices or dreaming. |
They arent going to sell at those prices. I highly doubt it.
Maybe we should all pool together and do a group buy. I've always wanted to do a QUAD STACK. |
Cliff, your avatar pic goes well with the pricing of these things
Still.. wouldn't mind a G90 thats barely seen the day of light!

Guy is on some GOOOD ASS CRACK to be charging prices for machines that are 12+15 years old
At least I KNOW curt can fix my CRT if I bought one from him. And he's more affordable!!! WAY more |
How do you know he hasn't sold any at this price?
I have mentioned this in the past, but I guess it bares repeating. I met Roger Galvin who calibrates the G90s for FH. This was around two and a half years ago. I bought a G90 that Roger was selling. Anyway, Roger said he was traveling to Asia (mostly China) to install and calibrate these pjs. According to him, they were still willing to pay the premium to own CRTs. I even mentioned at the time that Curt should look into marketing in China. Has the market collapsed or been saturated? I have no idea. IIRC,

No question that many of my high end sets have gone to China, Hong Kong and Japan. From what little I know of the Chinese culture, they have a real issue with something that's been repaired, they stay away from it like the plague. Someone needs to explain that to me, but even locally, I've lost sales on CL of flat screen TVs when I've mentioned that I've recapped the power supply or something simlar. Seems they'd rather buy an untouched TV with leaking caps than one that's been overhauled.
Similarly, I'm sure that FH can get the asking price for a new old stock set in Asia.

True he may be selling them for that price overseas, but even then I would question the market for them. CRT is getting older and older and digital is improving more and more, and prices are coming down. I would have to believe that even in China the market for digital PJs is growing and CRT is declining.
And in reality, regardless of if the G90 is new or not... its old, capacitors werent meant to sit idle for 10 years, plus theres the dallas chip issue with them, so spending $12,950 +$1000+ at minimum to rebuild id (and going through all the work) sounds a bit ridiculous. I could see a few thousand sure, but nothing that can buy one hell of a digital PJ that even some of the CRT die hards would have a hard time complaining about..

While that may be true, there are still those that are into these things at any cost. Just look at the people buying turntables and vinyl.
Curt,
I have never heard that. Maybe they know how poor the quality is on those flat screens since they made them.

Just a bit smaller than the g90. I can play too!
As for the 'no repair' thing, I saw this many years ago. Customer brings in a Sumo amp, which back in the day were high end audiophile stuff. One channel blown to smithereens. He absolutely refused to get it repaired, even though a new amp was literally going to be 10X the price of a new one. Someone in the Chinese culture needs to explain that train of thought to me...
