| Quote: | SOUND CITY, the film, was conceived by Grohl after purchasing the legendary custom-built Neve 8028 recording console from Sound City Studios last year. The board, built in 1972, is considered by many to be the crown jewel of analog recording equipment, having recorded such artists as Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, Guns and Roses, Metallica, NIN, Rage Against The Machine and countless other musical legends over the past 40 years.
Grohl's personal connection to Sound City began with the 1991 recording of Nirvana's breakthrough album, Nevermind. Selling over 30 million copies worldwide, Nevermind changed the entire musical landscape and forever altered the course of Dave Grohl's life. |
I love documentaries like this ... this one's going in the cart. Thanks for the heads up!
Reminds me a lot of the documentary "Side by Side" about the death of 35mm film stock I talked about here that I watched a few days ago: https://www.curtpalme.com/forum_archived/viewtopic.php@t=33270.html

JUST saw the trailer for this last night! Looks really, really good. Definitely buying on BD. For some reason, the rental on iTunes was $6.95 (vs $4.95 for most new releases).
I have to check out the Side by Side piece too, Kal.

I will definitely enjoy that. My wife would be bored stuff though, so I'll have to invite a couple of my friends who are into this stuff over to watch it with me.
Thanks for the reminder!

Any documentary on any vintage tech type equipment is just drool city for me. Music included.
Where's the camera crew that should be following Analog, MacGyver, Tinman and myself around?

So a buddy lent me his copy on BR, and I watched it at low volume on my 72" set. I could watch this literally dozens of times. It will most likely be the first thing that I'll throw onto my stack HT once I get it running.
An awesome flick, they get technical without going over (most) people's heads. Unless your wife or g/f is heavily into music or the making thereof, this is one that the guys should watch by themselves.. at high volumes.
Very highly recommended!

The PA amp and loudspeaker in that pic on the very top post, I have sitting in my storage room for a friend who needs it refurbished, Made by Kustom audio back in the 50s-60s
Very hard to find, rare, and quite the vintage piece, makes me think of those old conversion vans all pimped out with vinyl

Curt I just finished watching SOUND CITY!!!!!!! Everyone on the forum has to buy, watch and feel this Documentary!!!!
I want to own a sound studio after watching this!!!
I cant wait to watch it again. it made me laugh and cry at the same time.
The NEVE board is a work or art, and those who used it were amazing.
So if you haven't watched it yet Curt you have to....NOW!!!!!!
Cant wait till tomorrow to do it all over again.

I did watch it, have it on BluRay. ( I really need to defungus my Barco 808s RP!).
Awesome flick, good call reminding everyone here that this is mandatory watching for anyone with a passing interest in the recording industry, music, or audio. Yes, that automatically includes everyone here.
