Join Keanu Reeves on a tour of the past and the future of filmmaking in SIDE BY SIDE. Since the invention of cinema, the standard format for recording moving images has been film. Over the past two decades, a new form of digital filmmaking has emerged, creating a groundbreaking evolution in the medium. Reeves explores the development of cinema and the impact of digital filmmaking via in-depth interviews with Hollywood masters such as James Cameron (Avatar), David Fincher (The Social Network), David Lynch (Mulholland Drive), Martin Scorsese (The Departed), Robert Rodriguez (Sin City), Steven Soderbergh (The Ocean s Trilogy), and many more.

I watched this really interesting documentary last night - it just came out on Feb 5, 2013.

Keanu Reeves sits down with a bunch of really famous directors, DPs, and others in the film industry and talks about the move from film stock to digital in the creation of movies.

What's interesting is how candid some of the peole are. They seem really comfortable with Keanu probably because lots of them have worked with him. Interesting to hear big names describe 3D as "a Marketing F*** scheme".

They really get into the cutting edge of digital film capture as well as processing (VFX, DI, etc) and talk about recent products from Red and others from as late as 2012. Even some content on using DSLRs like the Canon 7D to shoot film.

What I didn't realize is (and this may be a bit of a spoiler) is that as of 2011/2012 there are no new film based cameras being manufactured at all. None. Wow.

Give it a spin if you're into this sort of stuff. I found it fascinating. I didn't know (for example) that Red was founded by Jim Jannard (founder of Oakley). I also didn't know that Larry Wachowski (of Wachowski brothers fame: Directors/creators of the Matrix series) is now Lanna Wachowski!
