The 2940 probably wont go that high, but i said 2950.
The NEC XM29 will do 1024x768 as far as i know, there is also a 36" Mitsubishi that will as well.

They are obviously around, i see more and more people on retro gaming forums showing their newly aquired PVMs on a pretty regular basis. There must be a few around!!

Just checked, XM29 does indeed do 1024x768.
Also does 1280x720 and 1920x1080. Along with a whole lot of other resolutions.

Why not just get a cheapo used digital projector? If its nothing that needs to be special there are a plethora of them out there on ebay for less than $80 shipped.
I have a 2000 Proxima does 1024x768 like a champ and weighs 43 pounds doing it, paid less than the cost of one of those "OEM" bulbs on ebay for it and its still going strong.
Yes, its digital, but its cheap, does the resolution you want (and then some). (but I do think that sony would still make one heck of a nice TV even for a garage )

However, as soon as you get into a higher scan rate the TV switched to 16:9. All my testing was done via component. You may be able to get 480p full screen but I can't remember for sure.
What I do know is once the scan rate went up the option to switch 4:3/16:9 was grayed out in the TV's menu. |
Arrgh, I was hoping you would respond, but I wanted a different answer!
So you put 800x600 or 1024x768 into it, but it gets squished down to widescreen and you don't get the full screen 4:3 option. Well that sucks.
Hopefully the guy with the RCA MM36100 will reply to my emails soon. That 36" set has a VGA input and I know for a fact it does 800x600 just fine. I spent $2500 on the same set back in the 90's and he's selling it for $50. I offered $30 but he hasn't responded.
Thanks guys! |
The feature you want is usable. You just have to enter the service menu to do it.
Go into the service menu by pressing [DISPLAY][5][VOL +][POWER] on your remote control, each of these buttons need to be pressed within one second of the last. The TV should turn on in service mode. Go to the 2170D_3 section and change the setting JUMP from 1 to 0. Save and you're done. You'll need to be in 1080i mode to begin with. At this point you will be able to use 960x720, in progressive scan, this is the highest resolution that this TV should be able to physically resolve. You will likely need to create a custom resolution in your PC's video control panel for this, but it will work. I don't advise that you mess with other service menu options. If you disregard this then you could render the TV unusable; if you want to play around with it anyway then write down every default setting before changing anything, or take photos of every setting with a digital camera, cellphone or something, so you can always get the settings back to the original.
And yes, I registered here just to make this post. Hope this helps.
