I'm looking to replace aur never-to-die sony 27" CRT tv with a 43" LED flat panel. (so that i will have room to set up a second reel to reel in that room
i want the feed a variety of HDMI sources to the TV (cable box, Blu-Ray, and so on) via a switch.
my audio is handled by a sony EP series processer that does not have HDMI. i only run two speakers off the sony, stereo is fine for this set up.
my question is about teh capability of the TV to extract SPDIF from the HDMI signal and whether or not the TV then sends the SPDIF signal to the optical/coax digital out. obviously i won't be sending 7.1 TrueHD to the TV...
this picture kind of describes what i want to do, i'll just have a HDMI switch in the mix

how do i tell if the TV will do this versus one that just uses the optical out for the tuner section?

Generally the optical out will be 7.1 for tuner audio and 2.0 for all other inputs. Of course this is not a given and can have various results depending on make and model.
Do you have a make and model of choice yet?

looking at a sony LED, model KDL42EX440 the sales guy said that the digital out audio gave what was fed from HDMI, but i can't see it in the manual/ and he said it was an LED TV, when the manual says LCD. sigh.

for models, the constaining metric is that it has to fit in a 43" wide space, including frame. that give me room for the revox to the left
we like the samsung we have upstairs (no cap issue yet), but it has a honking big reddish clear plexiframe that takes up too much landscape.
