Typically, we've been looking for and using as a reference the -3db rule for bandwidth. The goal would be to achieve a flatter bandwidth rating (see here = http://www.amx.com/techcenter/bandwidthcalculator.asp).
so for the absolute best bandwidth performance -3db may not be good enough..

Check out the read on a link on that AMX page (below). It will better explain why more is better, or why we should use a different bandwidth ruler for absolute best performance. And it'll also explain why you were able to get more and better colors.
These higher bandwidth neck boards/video chain I don't plan to offer here (not really needed), but do see a better use for them in a lot of the still in use CRT installations, where they have been running Marquees way beyond their bandwidth expectations. A lot of Stereo (3D) display systems using CRT are running at 104hz vertical. Or between 96hz and 104hz. The resolutions are usually anywhere from 1280X1024 on up. The image at the higher refresh and scan rates looks muted, so much so that the colors are hard to make out.
