Looks like my local has it in both 3D and plain version. suggestions? Which one will be more cinematic and easier to watch / enjoy?

Is either one the 48 frame deal? I want to see what the 48 frame picture looks like. so I'd find out if that's the case then go to see that one. I've heard that a lot of theaters didn't pony up the cash to buy the new projectors needed to display the 48 frames.

I just checked my local theater and it has 3 different versions playing; 2-D, 3-D, and HFR 3-D. I assume that HFR stands for: high frame rate. That will be my choice on Sunday afternoon.

For a movie like that, I'd probably prefer the 2D presentation. For one thing, the 3D and HFR 3D presentation will be another $2-3, making the ticket probably $12.50 or so. I HATE paying that much to see a movie.

That said, I really want to see the HFR version, just to see it. Looking at some tests I've seen from d-cinema cameras, I have a feeling I'll hate it, but I'd like to see it first-hand.

On the rare occasion I go to the theater, I take a water or Coke with me in my coat pocket. I hate to be a cheapskate, but I simply refues to pay $12-15 for a ticket, then pay $10 for a soda and popcorn on top of it. $25 for a movie, popcorn, and a bottle of water is just ridiculous by any standard.

looks like no HFR at my local place, oh well. It's 3 hours long, so I think a drink and pop-corn is mandatory, 2D it is then

We are going to see it tonight (have no idea if it will be the 3D or plain version).

As much as I enjoyed the LOTR movies, I honestly don't have high hopes for the Hobbit. Three movies for just this one book is just way to much and clearly is nothing but a money grab. I'd love to be proved wrong, but we'll just have to see.

Well I was very pleasantly surprised. I still don't think it needed to be three movies, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

A lot of backstory that does not exist in the Hobbit (some from Tolkien, some not) was brought in for both background information and to tie it into the LOTR.

Overall I guess maybe I need to be a little less cynical in my thinking Wink

I'm curious about high frame rate that it was shot with. It seems like it would take some getting used to, however I like to keep an open mind.

It looks like the IMAX 3D presentation of The Hobbit has a 9-minute clip from the new Star Trek: Into Darkness movie during the trailers. I'll put up with the everything I don't like about digital IMAX and 3D to get a peek at that.

And holy format variety - this film is available in 7 different sound/picture formats!! It looks like not all IMAX 3D presentations are also in HFR, only a small number are (link comes from TheOneRing.net):

I'd like to give the HFR a look and see how I like higher natively-shot framerates, given my dislike for framerate interpolation processing on LCDs.

just saw it in regular 2D, it was very , very good. I expected it to be good but was was worried about Peter Jacksons eagerness to totally f*ck up the story line. The story is changed, but not as bad as LOTR where they put elves at helms deep and the Hobbits are kidnapped by the men of Gondor for no apparent reason Rolling Eyes

At least here the changes enrich the story .

I actually like the fact that they added so many back-story's like Radagast and Azog, although Azog is dead in the hobbit book version. I knew they would do more than just mention Radagast and the Necromancer since it's 3 movies, but it works and the movie certainly didn't feel stretched. AAMOF, they even ended it masterfully so I suspect they might have hired some really good screen-play writers other than just Jackson and his wife.

I imagine in the second one, the 5 Wizards they will go after Sauron's presence in Mirkwood, and the entire section with the wood elves, etc.

I went last night to the HFR 3d version. I was disappointed in the PQ, I found it to be very sharp in some scenes and then what appeared to be out of focus in other scenes.
This was only my 3rd non-animated 3d movie that I have seen in a theater and have to admit that I'm not a big fan of 3d if the film isn't animated. 3d cartoons I'll watch all day long!!
First time ever (like everyone) seeing a film shot, so I don't know if what I was seeing was caused by the high frame rate or 3d, but I suspect it was HFR.
This was in a brand new cinema complex and the screen was huge! It was also gray, which was another first for me.

If the 3D isnt on IMAX I go for the 2D. IMAX 3D spoiled me.
