Several friends including myself own Samsung plasmas and so far no failures. What made you consider a plasma over LED ? I was about to post a plasma vs LED pro/con post but this should do...

Based on what I've seen so far, not including cracked screens, I'd say the lifespan overall is better with plasma, but it also uses about 5X the amount of power as an LED.

My main TV (plasma) is broke. Temporarily I've hung the spare room LCD in its place. Just terrible on every account except brightness.

I know the newer LED/LCD TVs are better than the back lit LCD. I just haven't seen any that don't look cartoon-ish IMO.

Go ahead and Post the Pro's and Con's.

I plan on waiting till after Christmas to purchase. Maybe find some deals.

If you're picky about image quality, I'd go by what you prefer. Frankly, anything I watch these days (until I hang my G90 over the holidays) isn't critical. I don't think (save for most of the no name brands) that there's any real life difference within the different manufacturers of the same technology. I know Tinman bought an LG based on power consumption alone.

Too bad pioneer doesn't make plasmas anymore, I'd have recommended one of them (I just got a 61" Professional plasma display from an interior design studio around here and :O :O now I know why people are still charging arms and legs for pioneer plasmas)

Anyway, given that fact, that leaves Samsung or Panasonic. Id have to say both are excellent brands for plasmas. Though I would have to go with a Samsung as my preferred plasma display. Samsungs have nicer looks, excellent customer service (they gave me $1100 for a defective 30" LCD they produced, without question) And as for their plasmas, they have the nicest PQ I have seen on a flat panel.

LED sucks, it still sucks, and it will always suck because it uses a crappy ass LCD panel still. My opinion though, you may prefer otherwise.

If you care about PQ, can tolerate the (what is it, $5 at most a month more for a plasma vs a LCD power consumption wooptie doo!) slightly higher cost to operate plasma, then go with plasma. The color is MMM MM good Very Happy

Ummm yeah, they had a class action lawsuit against them, it's right on their own website.

(it really kinda sucks, those sets were the fastest repairs ever, and I made good $$ getting them from the recycler and reselling them Cool )

Actually it was one of their 2560x1600 30" displays and it wasnt capacitor related, it was the reflective material they put in the LCD panel, somehow it had rippled in manufacturing and passed inspection and got sold to me that way. Obviously it couldnt be fixed because the ripples wouldnt come out (I did rip it apart to see if I could flatten it out a bit)

All they asked me for was a receipt which I was happy to provide and a week later I had $1100 sitting in my mailbox (along with a label for shipping the monitor back Razz )

Yeah, I had to resize the original pic for it to be an avatar and the quality went to sh*t. I'll have to try a different method and see if i can clear it up..

Can anyone shed some insight?

I've been to a number of local stores that carry a full complement of Samsung and Panasonic plasmas. All seem to be pushing Samsung. I'll say I'm looking for PQ over features, and the conversation turns straight back to Samsung. This happened at almost every store.

I know Panasonic are reducing plasma production volume over heavy financial loses. So one would think stores would want to clear out their panny stock. Confused

Samsung was or did spin off the flat panel division into a separate entity post Cap-gate. So why the heavy push to Samsung?

Well over here there is no doubt... Panasonic is the best PQ. I'm sure Samsung have more features..

But i guess most people love a smart tv calibrated to 9-10000K

Every year Value Electronics holds a rather extensive display shootout, judged by numerous respected calibrators and enthusiasts. IIRC, the most recent shootout found the Samsung plasmas to be the most accurate when calibrated, but the Panny plasmas had darker blacks.

There's all kinds of information on the shootout here (scroll down a bit): http://www.valueelectronics.com/

That is pretty much what I have found in my online searches.

And in store the Samsung do have the better smart TV features, better function IMO. PQ was difficult to judge as the feed was always terrible, every store. Only one store had a Sam/Panny side by side, I'd give the edge in PQ to Panasonic.

Normally I'd go Samsung with no hesitation if it wasn't for my current Samsung set dying premature.

I also seem to remember that Samsung is less resistant to IR and burn-in than are the Pannys.

I went with the samsung because I wanted bluetooth 3d glasses. And it works great, no disconnects.
Had to drive 250 miles to see one, no one in state carried the plasma.
I bounced back and forth on the led / plasma for a couple months, energy use / better picture, then found a
great deal on the plasma. Only problem is the extra 3" I left for the center channel speaker was 1/4" to short,
I still had to move the tv mount up 2 inches and adjust the mount points.
Will be hooking up the outside antenna this week, and finally can try PIP feature. Sadly only antenna input
allowed for the PIP secondary source.

Now if I can just figure out why the male cat likes sitting on the subwoofer, and the female won't get near it,
all will be right in the world.

AFryia,

I have a 60 inch Panasonic plasma. When I had Gannon out to set up my XG he tweaked the plasma and it looks fantastic. Go to Paulson's in Farmington Hills.
Jeremy,
I think Pioneer sold the Elite line to Sharp.
