Hi,
I got a Nec XG from someone who was storing it in their basement. It is in great condition, but smells like a moldy basement and blows mold around. I need to give it a good cleaning.
How do I clean the circuit boards, tubes, lenses, and chassis? Will it still work if I disassemble it, clean everything, and re-assemble it? Is there anything to be careful of?
Thanks!

You're asking for trouble. I'd throw an air freshener near it and call it a day. If you insist on pulling boards, flush with isopropyl alcohol, that's it. Not sure if that will get the smell out of it though. Id' simply clean all the plastic covers.

After it runs for a few weeks the smell will go away, just clean the outside.

Leave outside in the sun for the day. Make sure you cover the lenses. I wouldn't spray the internal components with anything.

You can take the plastic case off and wash it but make sure you don't damage anything.
I power washed my Sony 1272 at the car wash Just the case though. It was stored in a garage and two pigeons nested on it and got it full of pigeon poop.
I'd go with the alcohol wipe down and maybe a can of compressed air.

I think Scott said they used to wash them in a dishwasher at Ampro.
I cleaned mine with alcohol, water and a little cleaner mixture. I then rinsed them thoroughly and dried the hell out of them.

I do, but I'm a tech and at least pretend I know what I'm doing. I also only do it to boards that I can't repair... and no board I've ever run through the dishwasher has worked again.
Funny, I did some work on NEC PG boards this week, and it turned out that traces were nuked due to capacitor leakage. Running boards through the dishwasher didn't solve those, or would they, so I don't think I'll be doing that again.

2 years ago there was a bar in downtown SLC that was going to upgrade from a Sony D-50 to a LCOS setup. They were selling the D-50 for 25 bucks. the unit had turned yellow from nicotine residue all over it and the insides were even worse. My cousin bought it and he tried for weeks getting out the smell and the residue and then finally gave up.

He didn't try hard enough. My 1252 was a bar projector. I got the smell out. It took about 3 months but it's all gone. The 1252 is sitting here beside me and I can no longer smell it.
