I bought a late model ECP from Curt about 8 years ago. About 5 years ago it made a loud snapping sound and shut down or started beeping or something. I took the cover off and there was some smoke rising from the HV splitter area. I didn't have time to troubleshoot it back then, so it's been sitting idle for the past 5 years. I finally got it out and thought I'd see if I could get it going again. It's not really HD capable, but the tubes are in mint condition and if it's not too expensive to fix, it seems worthwhile (let me know if you think otherwise).
I've looked around for any signs of burned electronics using a flashlight and haven't found anything. I've also pulled the power supplies out and don't see anything obvious there either. When I turn it on the fans spin up. What are the next troubleshooting steps? Is there any way to test the HV power supply? It's a Spellman unit.

Hello
I recommend replacing the splitter first, see if it fires up. If not, the HVPS is also suspect.

It's definitely the splitter. I removed it fully from the bracket tonight and there's a hole burned through the plastic directly behind the input connection.

A splitter shouldn't be hard to find and should be practically free -- these are fun little machines! And with minty tubes should look nice. If it happens to have 07MS tubes (and not the SD187 tubes), let me know if/when you goto get rid of it...I'm always hunting for minty 07ms tubes.
bests,
Matt
