At RC Willy last night and the heat generating from the LG flat panels was simply amazing. So now, one can literally turn on a picture of a crackling fire and get heat from it. I never saw this coming.

Are you sure you were not looking at a plasma? The face of a plasma gets smokin hot. LCD comes in second and LED's that I've seen are at best warm to touch.

All 3 can generate simular heat. At 200mm away from the screen, the warmth can be felt about the same from either type. There is about 40 of them here of varying types and age, and none are significantly better or worse than an other. Except the 2x 68cm CRTs in the sports bar, which generate almost no noticable heat at all.
None of the plasmas here get any hotter than the LCDs.

Yeah, they can all put out quite a bit of heat, whether plasma, or LCD with LED or CCFL backlight.
Case, the CRT's put out plenty of heat, too... In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they actually dissipate more heat per square inch of viewing surface than do LCDs. CRT TVs just radiate the heat out of the rear of the case, rather than out the front of the tube (which has huge thermal mass because of all the glass.
Oh, and our projectors are terrible... I think my G70 was like 1000 btu/h, and a big machine like a G90 is close to double that. That's some serious heat output. If I closed the vents in my room, I could heat my 250 sqft room up nearly 15 degrees in a couple of hours.

How's that compare to your new JVC?

I just (today) got a new Acer 24" LED monitor. I can't feel any heat more than 1-2" from the screen. It's just barely warm to the touch in the lower center, and the rest of the screen feels cool to me.

Yeah i know they put out abit, but in terms of the heat areound these two sets, its next to nothing, the rear of the case is not really even warm. Air conditioned environment, but still nothing substantial around these 2 compared to the rest.

Hard to say since I can't find any published specs on the JVC, but my seat-of-the-pants guess is the CRT definitely put more heat into the room. The JVC is extremely quiet - nearly silent - even a few feet away. Sitting in my chair with my head five feet from the projector, I literally can't hear if it's on or off. If you hold your hand up to the exhausts, it's just a warm flow of quiet air - almost the feel of exhaling on your hand or something.

OK, I was really curious, so I looked it up... The G70 was rated 750W and 2593BTU. No doubt that rating is with max contrast and full-field white, but I'm certain the heat dissipation isn't that much different, regardless of APL. Let's be generous and say 500w/1700BTU under normal viewing.
The JVC is rated 330w with a 220w lamp. I run it in low-power mode, which from what I'm reading cuts the power to the lamp by just over a third, so I'd imagine the projector is dissipating around 250 watts or 850BTU.
So, seat-of-the-pants guess, the JVC cranks out half the heat of the good 'ol G70. The heat isn't a huge deal, but obviously the decreased heat dissipation also translates to a quieter projector, and that I care about a lot.

My plasma used to produce a lot of heat. The LG LED TV that replaced it produces no noticeable heat. I've run my hand all over the set, and it feels BARELY warmer than room temp. The LCD TV also uses 50 watts (MAX) instead of 300.
I used to not run the plasma on hot days just to keep the room cooler.
On projectors, my Epson LCD puts out a lot less heat than my Runco990 did. The room no longer heats up.
