I just got done building (I think) my new NAS. FreeNAS on an AMD Athlon II with 8 Gigs of RAM. Six Western Digital 3TB Green hard drives using ZFS file system configured as a RAIDZ1 array. Also an Intel NIC. Total cost less the hard drives was about $330. The six hard drives were another $700. Pics...

More PICs Here:

http://www.cir-engineering.com/bin/nas/nas1-2.jpg (front more open)

This serves three DUNE players throughout the house and also an Oppo BD player from time to time.

It kicks ass. I feel like having this much storage capacity at the tip of my fingers is actually outside the natural world Mr. Green

Nice job, plus very neat and tidy cabling.
What case is that? looks nice.

I agree, having a good amount of storage is great, so long as you have good movies on it.

Cheers

Thanks, I tend to spend too much time on cable management, but it makes it look good Smile

The case is a Fractal Design Define Mini. It's a nice case, but after having it, I don't think it's worth the money. Now I wish I would have gotten this one.

Movies take a lot of space, but it's TV shows that really eat it up. One season of a show takes 3 BD's so now Mad Men, Dexter, BSG.... take tons!

I run the yaDIS GUI interface on the DUNE players. I will post some screen shots of my movie wall later if you want.

I use two DUNE Base 3.0 players and one TV-101.

All Dune players support some sort of BD iso playback. The higher end models like the Base 3.0 support iso playback with full menu support (runs exactly the same as if putting a disc into a BD player with menus and all). The lower end models like the TV-101 support iso "lite" playback. With "lite" playback, when you select an iso, a list of all the titles on the disc comes up. You then select the title you want to play, and then the player goes directly to that track.

All DUNE players support iso (and any other file type) over SMB and this is how I use the NAS.

None of the current DUNE models support 3D iso. So if 3D iso matters to you than wait until the players come out Q1 next year (supposedly). The three top models coming next year that will support full 3D iso playback with menus are the HD Base 3D, HD Max 3D, and HD Pro. There are also two lower end models that should be available any day now that support iso and 3D iso, but only with "lite" playback. I want full menus with BD so I will wait to get another one.

Well, the Fractal case is much larger in person than what I expected. Also, the Fractal case front is made of plastic and I thought it was made of aluminum. And finally, the front screen filters for the fans don't come out of the case without a lot of tear down. It would have been much better if the screens just came out for cleaning. I mean, it is a nice case and it looks good, but it cost $100 and I think there are many cases out there that are nearly as good for around $60.

The Zigmatek case is made of all aluminum parts. It is also lower profile so would have at least seemed smaller I think. The Zigmatek is also on sale now for $90. It was on sale for $100 when I was looking, but if it had been $90 I probably would have gone with it... it was a close decision already. I now have a little remorse on the case decision.

Hell, I may evens still switch them and return the FD case, but that would be way to much work really Wink

Here is the interface.

Home screen.

Movie wall.

Movie selection.

Right now the yaDIS interface is stored on an SSD drive in the theater DUNE. The other two DUNE's access the interface through the network off the theater DUNE. The DUNE with the interface is a little faster for navigation, but not by much. I may remove the SSD and put the interface on the NAS instead now. The NAS I am replacing isn't very good with speed and small files which the interface has millions of. But I don't think the new NAS will mind.

So do you rip all your BR discs to hard drive by creating an iso?
